Very old Marlin in 38-40 - what is this thing?

This came to me and I don’t know old Marlins!

I found a page and punched in the serial number and it said it is 1894 manufacture.

I know there are some folks on here who might know what this is.

It is a Marlin Model 1894. You can see if is not a Model 1888 or 1889 because those two Models still used top ejection. Marlin switched over the the new “Marlin Safety” side ejection with the Model 1894.

Looks like a clean used rifle externally, not messed with, and the tang sight is a plus. How is the bore? That is going to affect the value.

Pics are blurry, but it looks like a later Lyman No 1A, and missing the rear sight. Yes, bore condition is a big consideration.

The 1889 is side ejection but you can tell it from the 1894 by the block extending down in front of the trigger when opened. Can't see with the trigger lock on.

This is correct...1889 side eject. And ser # on a Marlin wont tell you what model it is, they didn't "lot ser #'s " into models, they issued #'s into production line as needed no mater what model was currently being built in whatever year they were being built.

The pictures are kind of blurry but it looks like there is a lever lock on your rifle. If so it is a model 1889, the only Marlin lever action with a lever lock. Also the Aug. 1 1893 does not appear on the barrel and it would be present on the model 1894.

Yes, that’s right, I meant 1888. Have a couple of them, kind of like the top ejection on them. And, it is an 1889, I can see that lever lock too now. Maybe good thing I have an appointment for an eye test next Wednesday. I never even read the patent date, lol.

Price? Would love to have one in 38-40. Yes it is a keeper! Not a “show” piece but in great somewhat original condition....you can shot and show!
