Hello,
While hunting at a gunshow not long ago, I stumbled across a bag full of misc. 6.5X55 Mauser rounds. I am a collector of these rifles, and yes, I do have "The Crown Jewels" by Dana Jones, and many other resources.
There is one round, that I cannot identify. I have searched to no end to find information on it. The only real guess I can take of it, is that it is a very rare 6.5X55 SR (Semi-Rimmed) trials round aka "Union Cartridge". However the date is too late (trials in 1893). I can find no info on the headstamp. I am hoping someone here can help me out, or direct me to a source.

The case is the same size as a normal 6.5X55 EXCEPT: the shoulder is much more rounded, and the neck more elongated. The silverish curpo-nickle plated bullet is shorter than a normal m/94 round. The rim does not look the same, it is much thinner and slightly wider (Semi-rimmed?) than a normal round.
I have found a reference that D.W.M. was once "Deutsche Metallparronenfabrik Karlsruhe" (DM K), and that they dropped the name in 1896... however this refers to pistol cartridges (link here: h ttp://iaaforum.org/forum3/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=9890&view=next)
This could have been made for the Oberndorf manufactured carbines/rifles... in which case this could be quite a unique little round!
Headstamp:
D.M. @ 12 o'clock - NOT D.W.M.
18 (primer) 96
K. (Karlsborg?)
Any help I.D. this round would be very appreciated!
*Additional Info* I decided to use my digital calipers on the round. Whereas my normal 6.5 rounds come out at 6.65mm diameter at widest point, this round comes out at 7.20mm at widest point. Really stumped now! Was this for some export rifle that Germany made? Obviously not the Gew. 98, but an earlier Mauser action?
Thanks,
Drach
