This thread is designed to be a bit thought provoking and by no means insulting to my fellow shooting community. I will start off by saying that I have a Norc CQ-A and I love it. I also love looking through the threads of AR-15 builds and seeing all of the ###y accoutrements that some folks have added. The reason I started this thread is I realized a few years ago while hunting with a gentleman that I work with who just happens to have a brand new $2000 Benelli Vinchi 12 ga. Being a humble service member that I am, all I could afford or want at the time was a Remington 870 express to replace my old Cooey break action single shot.
It was opening day of goose season here in Ontario and my friend was still ribbing me about using my cooey last year (which has downed plenty of waterfoul for me when lead was legal) and now cheaping out and buying an 870 this year( I got alot of comments like "should have bought a Benelli, bud"). The hunt landed my other friend and I (who also swears by an 870) on one part of Howe Island and my Benelli toting friend (here after named beni) on the mainland side. Steve and I heard a very close together bang, bangbang with in 2 seconds. I am youngish but I have been shooting for better then half of my time here. I do not know anyone that can keep a 12 gauge on target in that short of time for all three shots. Steve and I then opened up on a small flock of geese each dropping one. We waited for Beni to come back from across the water expecting to see three gesse dropped by his $2000 weapon of waterfoul managment. We however were greeted to angry stares at the $2000 wonder like it was the guns fault.
Enough of the envious sounding hunting stories. I realized that I can do the same thing with a Cooey 84 that I can do with a Benelli Vinchi just without the style and speed as the latter.
So my big question is what is it that we can do with all of the Magpul and other accoutrements that makes a design, which is pressing better then 40 years similar to that of an 870, better? Is it only about D%*K measuring. Or does all of the extras truly make you a better shooter.
I believe that starting on the simplist platform is the way to go. For instance you are not going to teach your kids how the fire and aim a rifle with a 300 win mag. You are going to teach them with the "ole Fathful" 22 lr.
This is Canada. We cannot or should not use our restricted firearms to defend ourselves or hunting. So why are we seeing flashligts, lasers and night vision on a range only firearm?
Like I said in the beginning of this post I did not start this to begin a fight. I want to hear everyone's opinion in a civilized manner. As per every other thread concerning an AR platform don't be afriad to show pics if you can or need to justify the extras on your AR. I have my reasons and they are all to do with the Ontario Law Enforcment and Fire Games. That is Police, CF and Security invites only.
