thanks to a fellow cgn member, this one has joined the stable. Came to me in "attic or closet find" conditions, some patina and light surface rust. I very carefully cleaned any active surface rust off it to reveal an appealing brownish patina. It's an all-matching gun with a great bore :) The stock had what I think was nicotine stains on one side, so I suspect it spend many a year since 1945 hun on the wall somewhere. It cleaned off the nicotine using cotton swabs an pure alcohol. turned out great with excellent original finish underneath :) I didn't take pics, but the bolt internals and both stock parts are also stamped matching.

Heer proof:

The only spot of significant rust os on the rear band, presumably from a sling being attached and getting wet (?)

You should see their script "s". It looks like a greek "delta". It looks more like a script "a" than an "s". I never get used to it.

Interestingly, if it's a "p", then my receiver is unusual as the switch to block letter "ce" is thought to have happened in the "g" block.

Keep in mind it's a Walther receiver, so they likely received a batch of script Walther receivers after the Sauer plant switched to block lettering. Rifle looks great! You did a great job cleaning it up.

Good point, though on many Contract receivers (for example Saeur receivers supplied to bosigwalde), the roll stamp was only applied when the rifle was assembled at the receiving factory. In this case, that appears to not have happened.

According to Karabiner 98k, Walther supplied blank receivers and they were roll stamped by Sauer. Whether this practice continued past the range the book covers or not I don't know but I would assume so.

So if the change to block ce is supposed to be around the "g" letter block, I would have to think then that this receiver was either misplaced or set aside and then used in assembly past the typical switch from script ce to block ce. The other thing to consider is that there is almost always quite a bit of overlap in changing features from all makers. Lots of changes may start in a certain letter block but don't come into full production until several letter blocks later while stocks of old parts are being used or what ever the case is.

Interesting little feature at any rate.

I took a couple better pics when I had better light the other day. I also added and original mid-war cleaning rod with an appropriate level of wear on it. I also added the missing sight hood when I got it. I happened to have a spare original one in the parts bin with a matching level of wear.

Have a couple leads on an appropriate original sling. Most of my other 98's have original slings, so this one needs one as well ;)

Walther receiver proof:

Receiver without flash. It's got a pleasing patina with some honest finish wear. I like it.
