I just received my Vetterli-Vitali rifle and it puzzles me. It has a Vitali magazine, no magazine cut off, but it is 6.5 caliber and has the correct 6.5 rear sight. There is only one serial number. I am not experienced enough with these rifles to tell if it is a collection of mismatched parts. Any ideas or suggestions appreciated?

The only experience I have with Vetterli's is my 1934 Vetterli .22 trainer. It has serial numbers stamped on every part of it and they all match. Yours seems to have a serial number on the stock too, no?

I can't tell from your post whether you're saying there's only a serial number stamped in one place on the rifle, or there's only one number stamped all over.
 
Yes - a M1870/87/15 barrelled action dropped into a M1870/87 stock and mag assembly. Useful for parts.

Yes there is a number on the stock, 1884,:redface: I took it to be a date not a serial number.

Thanks all for the information. I believe that to shoot this rifle I would have to use mild loads, correct?

Definetly, as it is still a Black Powder rifle. service loads are NOT ON
These rifles were issued to rear echelon types who had to be armed with something. Not intended for front line use.
 
I have shot my M1870/87/15:

- 135 gr cast bullet
- 8.0 grs Unique
- 1325 fps

In that big heavy gun it sounded and recoiled like a 22.
