Victoria Fish and Game Protective Asc. VZ/58 Rifle and Shotgun Class: September, 2012

Equipment check

Hey all! As Hondatech requested, here is a list of what you will need:

CZ/VZ course:
·******** Reliable firearm and at least 4 magazines (7.62x39 or 5.56 - both are good!)
·******** Chest rig or belt mounted magazine pouches that can carry at least 3 magazines
·******** 500 rounds of reliable ammunition
·******** Clothing suitable for inclement weather
·******** Sunscreen
·******** Hydrating fluids and snacks
·******** Booboo kit (band-aids, surgical tape, chapstick, etc)
·******** Cleaning gear
·******** Suggested: Notepad and pen, elbow and/or knee pads

For shotgun:

Eye and Ear protection, baseball cap
200 birdshot (7 ½ or 8) 25 buckshot, 30 slugs
Shell caddies, shot shell belt or pouches for ammo carriage (even a cheap nylon shell belt from Canadian Tire will work!)
Clothing suitable for inclement weather
Sunscreen
Hydrating fluids and snacks
Notepad and pen, elbow and/or knee pads

We get a lot of inquiries about which shotgun is best. I have experience with most platforms and can help you optimize your manipulation of your gun.

For those of you who run folding stocks, you may discover that the metal folders (like the Remington police folder) are akin to a medieval torture device. While they look cool they aren't the best device for a high round count course.

Another often asked question is about why we run so much birdshot. The primary issue that I see with the shotgun is that most shooters require work on manipulating and knowing how to properly load, unload, speed load and work the shotgun accurately. Using birdshot allows this annnnnnddddd..... IT'S CHEAPER than buck and slugs!

So what is everyone shooting at the courses?:)

Ugh... I just got my hands on a shotty and an 858 (both borrowed)... but I can't make it to the course! ARG!

Gotta figure out a way to get Earl back here for another carbine course or something...

Hi guys,

The club opens at 8:30 am with shooting allowed to start at 9:00am. Please wait at the entrance to the club (in the parking area beside the caretakers house) at 8:30am so you can follow us down to the range for a 9:00am start. There is a locked gate into the Multipurpose range so we need to let you in if you aren't already a member. We will be located on Bay 7.

Here is the address and directions to the club for the non-local participants:

700 Holker Place, Malahat BC, V9B 2V5

Directions to Victoria Fish Game

The club is located a short 20 minute drive north of Victoria. Travel north from Victoria on the Trans Canada Highway #1 to the top of Malahat Mountain. Turn right on to Holker Place, and go 100 meters to our property entrance. Holker Place is approximately 1 kilometer past Shawnigan Lake Road and is opposite the turnoff to Spectacle Lake Provincial Park.

The Multi Purpose range has a pota john for washroom facilities. You need to pack in your lunch and bring lots of water, etc. I also recommend bringing knee pads of some sort because of the terrain. I just use some $15 Home Depot specials, they don't have to be fancy. Don't forget your sunscreen. Some of the guys got wicked burns last time.:D

Can't wait for these courses! I spend far more time on my pistol and AR15, so there is lots to learn! I'm also looking forward to seeing some of the past course participants again :)

Haha. Dr. Green prescribes a very popular treatment method... could I get a doctors note from you Earl? Heheh.

But, looks like I'll have to sit this one out. Hope to see you back on this side of the country again soon!

I'm tired, sore and dirty. What an action packed day of shooting! I learned a ton!

When I walked through the door my lovely wife took one look at me and declared, "you're filthy"!

She was right. Was anyone else spitting out range dust for the first hour? :D

Shotgun tomorrow!

Well, both shoulders are nicely tenderized; bruised and red! You haven't lived until you've fired a bunch of slugs from the prone and urban prone positions! I learned that shotguns are unforgiving and they take a lot of skill to operate properly. It was a very eye opening course for me.

Many thanks to Earl for running two days of great courses! I learned a ton of stuff that I have to digest and employ in my personal training schedule. Also, many thanks to the participants of the courses, they are truly a great bunch of guys!

Earl is already talking about coming out again, so stay tuned for Advanced Carbine Course dates, he has some great stuff already planned for this so stay tuned!
