Hi All

I have been looking into getting a 22lr target pistol. Just looking for some advice or experience from others on the site. The three most prevalent entry level pistols I have come across were the Smith and Wesson Victory, Ruger MarkIV and the Browning Buckmark. From what I can tell is that all three seem to be about the same. Having never fired any of these I was wondering if one was better than the other in terms of reliability and accuracy or if any of you have any other recommendations for other models. Thanks in advance.

I own both a buckmark and a victory they are very similar accurate and reliable, the mark 4 is also similar however it is far easier to take down and the price reflects that. The ruger and mark 4 have more options as far as upgrading goes but the victory is coming along nicely. Also the mark 4 and buckmark have a ton of available models where the victory has two or three.

So I guess it comes down to what’s comfortable to you.

Hope that helps

There are plenty of options, including the ones you mentioned... the Beretta NEOS, Browning challenger/nomad, the rest of the MK rugers...

I have a buckmark, and it is reliable, and I quite like it. But my advice would be go to somewhere you can handle them and see what one fits you the best.

I love my Ruger MKIV 22/45. Accurate pistol and lots of aftermarket support. I bought the cheapest one knowing I was eventually going to upgrade. Easy to add a rail and a red dot to it. Very happy with my decision. I've put about 800 rounds through it at Racegun matches and it rarely has an issue.

I have shot all 3 and I got an amazing deal on the victory so that is the one I bought. As for upgrades Tandemkross and Volquartsen make a lot of upgrades for them. It comes down to you holding and handling them to see what you prefer.

Got the buckmark camper with few upgrades, also got a buckmark rifle. If they ever ban handguns, I will transfer everything over to the rifle.

I had a Buckmark and sold it many years ago. I bought a Victory last year and I am very happy with it. I think it is the best value (price, accuracy and quality) target pistol you can find.

I'm still a fan of the older Ruger MK1/2 pistols, the longer taper barrels balance nicely compared to the heavy barrels, the standard sights are fine as well, I really don't have much preference between them and the adjustable sights, both provide good sight pictures. Only thing I ever wear out are recoil springs, MKI's can be found for $300 in great shape, MKII's usually a bit more, add $100 for a stainless version.

Had the buckmark rifle before, it developed a slide stop issue due to the grip not sitting quite flush with the frame, so I got rid of it. The only firearm I regretted selling. Early this month I found a brand new one local to me, haven't shot it yet.

They are nice, lightweight and nimble. Parts between the rifle and pistol are interchangeable which appeals to me.

Lesson learned with the rifle, don't use the slide stop to drop the slide, slingshot it.

I shoot a Buckmark lite for steel challenge, and shoot with a few guns that run MKIVs and Victorys. I like the Buckmark a lot, but tearing it down for cleaning sucks. I have a red dot on it, and you have to remove the top strap (?) to disassemble it to clean the bolt, etc. Have to re-zero when it is all put back together (Though it is usually pretty close). Not ideal. The Rugers tear down a lot more easily. Not the biggest fan of the Victory, I've seen them have reliability problems, but they're cheaper.

If I had to start over, I'd buy a MKIV 22/45 lite.

I've owned a few semi-auto .22lr HGs over the years. While I don't shoot them often I believe everyone should have one in their cabinet.
Out of the 3 on your list I would pick the Ruger. Lots of models, accessories and support.

I only have one semi-auto .22lr now. MKIII 4.25" tapered barrel model. It's got some good heft and looks cool imo:)
Surprisingly accurate and not ammo sensitive. Built to last......

The Ruger MKIV's take-down a lot easier than the earlier versions.
I added a Sam Lam hammer bushing for ~ $15. Actually, Sam installed it. Turns out he lives down the "street".

WHAT THIS MODIFICATION DOES:
Magazines Fly Right Out! No more prying out bound up magazines after hitting the release button.
Simplify Disassembly and Reassembly - No Magazine insertion/removal steps required
Clean Up Trigger Slop.

I have owned a bunch of different pistols over the years. Semi-auto rimfire pistols get dirty when theyre shot and especially so with cheap bulk ammo. If teyre difficult to strip and clean youll either not shoot it much or shoot it without cleaning and youll have an unreliable single shot. I would strongly suggest putting your hands on as many as you can to decide what fits and naturally points for you. Grip angle is huge imo. Recently bought a Volquartsen Scorpion with all the goodies and put a razor on it. Not cheap but what an unbelievable pistol! If you get hooked you may end up with a seperate safe just for handguns HAHA

If you want a really nice, true target grade pistol, Tradex has a few nice condition High Standard Military in stock, less then these other 3 options presented and much higher quality for the price.

Love my buckmark so much I bought a hunter as well, never shot a ruger, but i had a victory and hated the trigger. It had to much pre travel and wasnt very crisp. I had the same complaint of my mp9 and sold that as well.

Buckmarka definetly have the most aftermarket options though, like barrels and trigger kits etc
