Today, I began my M14 project. After stripping the bbl and reciever I figured the next step is to remove the dreaded set screw. I will be putting a USGI unit on, so the set screw had to go.

After reading McKee and Kuleck's book, I was expecting a battle. Fortunately it did not materialize. The stake was quickly removed with my dremel and a fine tip bit and with only a litle coaxing out she came.

A very satisfying start to my project.

Now I am waiting on the tools from Brownells and I can move on to removing the FH, removing the Norc bbl, fitting the new bolt and screwing on the new bbl.

Darn,
and I went out and bought two different types of impact drivers just to deal with those pesky screws ...

Don't bother grinding....

With a properly fitting screwdriver, the setscrews turn right out past the crappy norinco staking job. You shouldn't need to grind up the finish.

God bless you , getting rid of that stupid useless set screw. Remember that we have a pile of experienced barrel changers here waiting to advise !

Cheers,
Barney

I suspect that the staking is about as uniform as the spot welds on the flash hiders.
Sometimes getting these screws out is a pig, sometimes not so much. Using a tiny bit in a hand grinder would be a very effective way of clearing the metal staked into the screw slots, and it is obvious that the receiver wasn't marked up.
