Video; 17hmr vs. dogtown = ghosttown

Holy sh*t, thats why I absolutely love my HMR. I couldnt compel myself to watch all of it though... whatever, pests need to be taken care of.

Don't need an expensive .17 to do that job. My son and myself only use 1940 marlins and Mossys and we went thru over a brick and a half each day we were shooting critters. The .17 looks good in the vids but the lowly .22 kills 'em dead just the same. We go out 10 days at a time....

That looks about right. Don't get me wrong, I like my .17 but if I am in a heavily infested field I find myself going back to the trusty .22LR. There is nothing you can do with a .17 that a skilled trigger man can not do with a .22LR. The .17 causes more damage on gophers though, and the wallet.

somebody should tell that guy to raise it up a bit. Most of the ground shots were skipping before they hit the critters. If you hit them clean it usually blows them up real good. And yes you can do just as well with the trusty old 22.

With the way the ammo prices are climbing for the .17 and .22 magnum stuff...how anyone can afford them. The .22 ammo is going up too but way less expensive. Where I shoot, there are no shops that carry .17 ammo but all the gas stations handle .22. In one 10 day period, we went thru almost 10,000 rounds ( the numbers of gophers were unbelievable, so I started taking pics) . What deep pockets can shoot .17s the same amount. I Like all guns but practicality has to set in. But the novelty soon wears off, when the bank account shrinks. i used to use my Savage .223 with reloads for the critters, but expense got me to the .22s and they can be accurate out to 200 yards.

Its not that 17 HMR is a bad round for varmint hunting, its an excellent round, it just all comes down to what your wallet can handle, sure LR is much cheaper, but I still rather spend the cash and bring out the HMR. If you can afford to shoot it to a large extent, why wouldnt you? Something about that round that never gets boring.

I always take a scoped 17 HMR and an iron-sighted 22 LR to the gopher patch - that way you can enjoy the best of both cartridges - hard to complain about either cartridge's capabilities, and you don't spend all day blowing off high dollar ammo.

:agree: I do the exact same thing. Once you get board of going 100 for 100 with the HMR, the open sights are a little more of a challenge.
