Well I guess I have deeper pockets and 3 17HMR's, but I wouldn't blast off several thousand rounds in one rifle. When I go I like to take several rifles and I'll shoot a brick of 17 HMR, then I will switch to my Cooper Mach II and shoot a brick of that. Then I'll pull out my current favorite 22, last season it was my new Browning Varmint Buckmaster. This season it will be my new 19 Calhoon or perhaps my new CZ 511. Variety also makes for great gopher shooting. FS
 
I had a great weekend in AB last May shooting gophers.

I used a Marlin 60, .22lr with Remington Yellow Jackets. I was amazed at the accuracy and the reach.

They were pretty devastating. Sometimes immensely so, but I watched this whole video, and the HMR seemed to anchor more of them more quickly than the Yellow Jackets did.

I picked up a barely used, older Savage .17 HMR (non accu trigger) to try on gophers this year, and can't wait.

I'll still have the trusty Marlin handy though.

Where are you finding that kind of population around here? and can I go with you?
 
I have both and I have to say I absolutly love the 17hmr. 5 shots 100yrds and 1" grouping. Just gotta love it!!! oh yea and it takes squirrels out at 100 yrds and rabbits!!! oh and don't forget crows hate the 17hmr and so do foxes!!
 
17 HMR's are a neat little round. I have never owned one, but have been to a gopher patch with a few guys who brought'm. The cost and availability of ammo was their biggest b_tch.
 
With all the comments on the cost of .17 HMR ammo vs. .22, I for one don't enjoy the shooting sport because it's cheap, just because it's so dang fun. If I shoot 50 rounds of rimfire for two bucks or 10 bucks it's still a lot of fun. And that my friends is what it's all about, but that's just my opinion.

Yeah, but the last box of 17hmr I bought a month ago cost me just over $20 taxes in and I don't have any other choices in town. I can reload centerfire for that.

I guess my point was shooting in general is not a cheap hobby. I love shooting rimfire as much as centerfire. Some calibers are more expensive than others but in the end we're all poking holes in paper or in this case critters. The grin on my face is a little tighter when those holes are a little closer together and I guess you can get that with 2 or 20 dollars a box. Point taken.
