With the way the ammo prices are climbing for the .17 and .22 magnum stuff...how anyone can afford them. The .22 ammo is going up too but way less expensive. Where I shoot, there are no shops that carry .17 ammo but all the gas stations handle .22. In one 10 day period, we went thru almost 10,000 rounds ( the numbers of gophers were unbelievable, so I started taking pics) . What deep pockets can shoot .17s the same amount. I Like all guns but practicality has to set in. But the novelty soon wears off, when the bank account shrinks. i used to use my Savage .223 with reloads for the critters, but expense got me to the .22s and they can be accurate out to 200 yards.
Well I guess I have deeper pockets and 3 17HMR's, but I wouldn't blast off several thousand rounds in one rifle. When I go I like to take several rifles and I'll shoot a brick of 17 HMR, then I will switch to my Cooper Mach II and shoot a brick of that. Then I'll pull out my current favorite 22, last season it was my new Browning Varmint Buckmaster. This season it will be my new 19 Calhoon or perhaps my new CZ 511. Variety also makes for great gopher shooting. FS
