Views on your AR helping me pick mine???

Looking to purchase my first AR, I have been looking at the Noveske shorty & a few other medium to short models. Let me know your first hand experience please, about Brands & pairing uppers & lowers, Accesories....etc!. I know this has been beat to death on many other threads but I figured I would ask based on I have a couple Brands in mind. Thanks in advance.:cheers:

my suggestion is do not get hung up on name brand, for the most part most of these guns are made from parts all from the same source....

Noveske, KAC, Larue and so on are great guns and I would call them "semi custom" since they are assembeled with care and usually by a single worker assembling a single gun.

For your first gun I say buy a complete gun for sure, but lower your sites to a STAG, ARMALITE or any of the other available manufacturers.... I prefer stag myself.

frankly I think stag is the equal of any gun out there and they are easily obtainable in canada (unlike for example noveske, etc.)... if you want to support a local alberta company buy an Alberta Tactical Rifle Lower, accesorize it to what you want and then throw a stag upper on it :)

Walter is also manufacturing his own barrels now, so you can have whatever you want for length, from 10.3" to whatever.
 
Westicle dosn't Stag use Noveske barrels? I thought that they were the same as Bushmaster AR-15 and Remington R-15? Am out 2 lunch or what?

You are going to pay a premium on the 'premier' manufacturers/assemblers, like Noveske, LMT, Colt,Larue, etc....
They do appear from time to time on the EE, but their scarcity is reflected in the prices....
I agree with Westicle...go with one of the other more accessible manufacturers such as Stag or Armalite...
I currently favor LMT...3 complete carbines...but have owned, and had no real issues with, Stag, Armalite, etc.......
 
I've had success with these brands: Colt, Olympic Arms, DPMS, Bushmaster, Armalite, and Eagle Arms. Frankly, it's all hype, all the information on premium or percieved premium parts. Then again, I'm only a competitor with about 2000 rds downrange each season. I am not an operator whose life depends on the boomsticks, FWIW. :rolleyes:

I like Westicle's advice: buying a complete rifle like a Stag, Armalite, RRA, Colt, Eagle Arms , etc initially. As your comfort level grows, consider building some upper receiver projects and then venture into the lower receiver addiction(s). Loads of fun.

Then finally, GET OUT and compete with your black rifle at your Provincial Rifle Association's Service Rifle or local GC's 3 gun matches!!

Just don't buy some LaRue, Noveske (hey, I do wear a Noveske hat :rolleyes:) , LMT, Knights , or other exotic boomstick and then STARE and yourself in the mirror while wearing your 'doorkicker' outfit! :D Too many of those airsoft (flame suit ON :D ) wannabees buying the AR's and then not coming out to my matches! (extra high temperature flame retardant applied :evil: ).

Is there a thread somewhere that explains with a bit more detail what type of equipment is required for matches? I've heard that 16" is the minimum barrel length but haven't seen anything to back that up. Having an idea of how many mags a guy would need and who uses 10 round mags would help too.

Hungry here: Service Rifle Mod hat ON here.... I only bring 3 x 5/30 rounders along. No joking. I'm talking about the Matches 1-12 of the CFSAC/NSCC Service Rifle course of fire. Most of the PRA's are conducting most of the 12 matches, some in varying configurations. Length of barrel ? Irrelevant; so don't you worry. I've even had my ass kicked by another AR shooter (happens to be a 1st class shooter, too) with a 12" barrel at 500m :eek: No Joking!! I've had success with 20", 16" and 14.5" barrels up to 500m at our matches in Connaught Ranges. Hope this helps.

Walter is making barrels - I wasn't aware of this, now I have to phone Newfoundland to find out, I might get my shorty upper from Armseast.:D
