Vintage Service Rifle Championship Rules (.pdf)

This will be the first time in the nine years this championship has taken place where we raffle off a rifle.

The board of directors have approved my request to purchase a Soviet SKS-45 for the purpose of a raffle prize.

More details on the raffle at a later date. The picture above is the actual rifle that will be raffled off.

The SKS45 was a self loading carbine using the new 7.62x39 cartidge developed by the Soviets in 1943. Field trials proved the weapon and, in 1944 a pre-production run of the SKS45 went to the Byelorussian front for battlefield trials. After some small 'tweaking,' it was officially adopted and designated the ''7.62 Samozaryadnyi Karabin Sisyemi Simonova Obrazets 1945g (7.62 Simonov System Selfloading Cabine Model 1945)-- shortened to SKS45-- and chosen as the ideal replacement for the SVT40.

Fundamentally, there is NO significant difference in a rearsenaled Russian SKS and pristine one. As a matter of fact, most times if the rifle didn't have the rework stamp on it, it would be extremely difficult to determine if it was overhauled or not. Russian SKS quality is top notch, so even a surplus Russian SKS is better than most brand new unfired Chinese SKS's. If the Russians thought it was necessary to rework the rifle, then most likely the rifle needed it. The process usually included a new barrel, buffing the scratches out of the metal, reinforcing the wrist of the stock and re-bluing.
