I guess there's no species in North America that isn't threatened by some sort of new virus? But anyway, porcupines are mostly encountered by hunters I think and I was brought up to consider them emergency survival food; we weren't supposed to kill them because they were the one animal that a lost human could easily kill for food- you were supposed to punch them on the nose. Never tried it myself.

As far as the virus goes, I'm sure the government can save them if they can get them to wear the little masks.

BAR HARBOR, Maine (AP) - At least three porcupines in Maine have died from a virus that wildlife experts say could pose a threat to the population of the spiky rodents.

The Bangor Daily News reports five porcupines had to be rushed to Acadia Wildlife in Bar Harbor during a week this fall because of illness. Three died. Biological samples later diagnosed the porcupines with skunk adenovirus 1, which was first seen in a skunk in Canada in 2014 and has since been spotted in other mammals.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is now working with wildlife researchers, rehabilitators, and trappers to study the virus.

On the upside, can you think of an animal more adapted to giving vaccine injections???

I think they will be fine after giving 257 injections simultaneously...

Being as they are not very numerous, nor are they terribly social animals (ever seen a marauding pack of porcupines?) it seems to me there may be bigger things to worry about.

I actually did, sort of, if I can make a pair into a marauding pack, but I've already typed that little adventure out here.

Very easy to kill, and don't taste as bad as you would think. Tried one over an open fire...was tough, but tasted similar to pork. Would probably be good pressure cooked. Be careful skinning them obviously.

They are easy to kill, but a lot tougher than a "punch in the nose". Beating one to death with a stick would not be hard if you can find one on the ground.
I've been on a porky elimination bee since I bought this place. They chew cabins and trees, the damage they can do to a young stand has to be seen to be believed.

My neighbor has a cabin that when he bought the place was full of porky crap. They got inside, chewed several holes in the floor, the stairs, the walls. Last time I was in there it still stank of porky. He told me it was a foot deep in places.

Having found dens, I can believe it. You can smell the den from down wind.

Beat a couple porcupricks to death with tree branches when I didn't want to waste a round on them. Also used a big rock on one lol just doing my part to protect the dogs.
