Vltor VIS Upper - Opinions & Vltor Dealers

Maybe I'm missing something, but what makes this upper so much more expensive than other more mainstream uppers?

Is it made of some special metal, or is there some other special reason you need a continuous rail for the range?

You wouldn't happen to want to spend so much when cheaper options are available just because you want something different and for you, it's worth it, would you?

Nah, that can't be it.

I myself can't see paying so much for an upper when other options are available.

I haven't really seen any defensiveness.

I would never think of spending $10-15k on a sled, or $20k on an over/under shotgun, or $10k for a set of speakers, or $3k for a 1911. But I won't annoy those that do. If it's what they want, then they have their reasons, and all the power to them.

Even if the only reason it's more expensive than the LMT is a change in 3 letters to KAC, then who cares. You're either going to buy it because you want it, or go elsewhere because to you, it's not worth it.

Brilliant wicked! Greentips bans users for setting up dual accounts but not for having a dual personality :D

I was just trying to point out the irony of the OP as well as someone he mentions in his post, in their 'need' of an expensive piece of kit when something else that's far less expensive will do just as well.

As an example,

....I was making fun of everyone else that drops a small fortune just to say they have something from "Knights Armament Company"

I guess Im guna have to wait for Kevinb to give some actual technical specs and data as to what makes their version so pricey. Im not dissin' Im just looking for facts to justify the extra cost...

So far all Im gettting from you guys is that the extra cost is just for the name.

As I said in the other post, If it's what they want, then they have their reasons, and all the power to them.

No worries W, just ribbing you. I think it's fair to say that once we enter this game rationality walks out the door and the evil toy demons take over :D I wouldn't have it any other way. Besides, he who dies with the most toys (best toys?), wins ;)

have you recieved the upper yet?

I canceled the order just before it shipped because I found an LMT MRP upper instead.

Holy dude, you have lots of time on your hands. For the record when did I ever diss on anyone for wanting high end kit??? please quote it for me.

I was generally interested in detailed info on the rifle, at the time I was sure there had to be something more to the KAC rifle because of the price it commanded, thats it man.

I wasn't knocking it at all, I think it's badass and Im concidering one. If you knew me you'd know that everything I buy is high end. Quality not quantity. When I want something I do research to prevent any mistakes (I've learned the hardway from impulse buying) doing this also adds to the enjoyment of the purchase.

....

Anyway onto the Vltor upper... The upper starts out as two pieces BOTH machined from a solid block of billet, once completed they're mated together as one. IMO having a monolithic upper adds to the strength and durability of the weapon, I also like the seamless look. In terms of material the upper is made from aircraft grade aluminum and hardened to T6 specs. These features all add to the higher cost of the upper.

The reason I got hooked on monolithic setups is again the seamless look but also the proprietary looking setup, less franken AR.

In the end I decided to switch to the LMT setup for three reasons. 1. LMT customer service. 2. LMT's mono upper is machined from one piece. 3. MRP barrel system.

Never said you dissed anyone. Just wanted to make the point that something doesn't have to be extra special to everyone (just you) to demand a premium price.

I've seen some of your guns that you've posted pics of, so I know you don't cheap out on stuff. And while I may not see the need to pay extra for the things you do, I'll never question your need or want of them.

Like I said, I was just making a point.

OK that's fair. Although Im still waiting to see what kevinb has to say. I know he knows some more details on the build quality of KAC rifles. I wanna hear about them, the name is one thing, but you dont get the reputation KAC has by building average rifles. Theres more to KAC then just a name, I just find it hard to believe that the price is based on just the name...
