Volkssturmgewehr VG 2

Yes, well, the choice was between waiting for the Russians to shoot/bayonet/beat you to death and let your womenfolk be savagely raped, or trying to mount some sort of defense. Not very good odds on either side of that coin.

For a great perspective, I recommend "Ivan's War" by Catherine Merridale and "The Fall of Berlin: 1945" by Antony Beevor.

This cemetery was in Nord-Rhein Westphalen, east of Fort Henry BHQ CMBG. The Arnsberger Wald is the largest forested area in Germany, larger than the more well known Schwarz Wald (Black Forest) in Bavaria.

IIRC, and its been 30 years, sooooo. There was a small monument in the woods a couple hundred metres from CFB Badens back gate, which I thought was dedicated to Volksstrum members gunned down by one of thier own when they decided enough was enough and they were going home. I distinctly remember the two things, but maybe I am putting them together incorrectly.

Have not read Beevor but Merridale's work is exhaustive to say the least.
