took a train ride down to the easter gunshow to take a look for a few items, all of which I was able to find. two things I purchased were the Volquartsen target hammer kit as well as the charging handle. upon installing the charging handle and the hammer kit, I was completely unable to cycle the bolt with the magazine in. magazine out, no problem. but as soon as the magazine goes in, it freezes and refuses to move backwards. when I replaced the aftermarket charging handle with the original Ruger handle, it cycled very nice and smooth as well as the trigger pull being substantially reduced. is this a common occurance with this model of charging handle? or am I just lucky. considering selling it. the Volquartsen charging handle I mean.

Check that there is a "bevel" on the first bend in the handle (compare to the factory handle to see what I mean)... there was talk on RFC of a problem with a run of VQ handles... a little filing and the problem is fixed. I had the same problem with a couple RT handles a couple years ago.

Is anyone using an older 10/22 receiver? (pre 1987)
They have a double rail and will bind your bolt if you put in a charging handle with a single rail design.
Food for thought....

Mine is dragging as well. I am trying to picture where to file if needed.

I figured out on my new charging handle where it would hopefully benefit from some careful refining and polishing of the gliding surfaces. it does seem to have helped a small amount, but the actual handle part of the unit was still binding something terrible.

it seems this issue is happening far too often to just be bad luck. like a bad production run or something. I have put in an email to Volquartsen explaining the issue so we will await a reply.

as far as the age of my 10/22 it is less than a year old having been purchased brand new in august of 2011. birch stocked carbine model.

I was just cruising through the Volquartsen home page looking at this and that and found the listing for the bolt handle/guide rod we are having trouble with. the description on the website states that it has been extended a quarter of an inch over the stock guide rod/bolt handle assembly. it does not state explicitly whether this is referring to the guide rod itself, or the length of the charging handle only but if it is referring to the guide rod itself, this would be a likely cause of the grief we are experiencing?

Volquartsen charging handle and guide rod are not compatable with the factory bolt, only Volquartsen's bolt. I think that is stated on their website somewhere.

nope I just checked, there is nothing to be said about this unit being meant only for the VQ manufactured 10/22 bolt. they do mention something about it being the same shape and design as the bolt handle included with the CNC machined VQ bolt but thats it. nothing definitive

Double check as well that where it rests ontop of the firing pin, that it isn't restricting it's movement. IF so, you'll have to notch a groove for the pin. I double checked mine, and movement was good. Like mentioned above, make sure you bevel the edge and you should be absoultly fine!!!!

I installed one on my new Ruger, first attempt to pull back the handle didn't feel right, really muddy feeling. I disassembled the action and noticed there was some aluminum ground off the actions inside rail closest to ejector. I filed the top of the new handle and the side with the handle. I also rounded the sharp edges. I candled the toggle handle part then put the the bolt back in, cycled the bolt very slowly then removed it. The shiney metal told me where where it was binding. After a bit of filing with trial and error its working smooth. I never had any problem with the firing pin although it was replaced with a one from the custom kit I bought.

Well mine was drop in...
