So since I read very few reviews on this line of scopes but knowing Vortex quality on the Strikefire and Sparc, I decided to be the Guinea Pig.

I picked up the Vortex Crossfire 6-24x50 AO 30mm Riflescope with Illuminated Reticle. Why? Well I like scopes with decent magnification. The price was $259.99 plus taxes and shipping. I was a little worried on spending $300 on a scope that I knew nothing about.

The scope arrived in a box that was 4 times too big, those guys at Grouse River Outfitters know how to pack a scope up!

So I pulled the scope box out from all the foam packing peanuts and it was still a large box!

Inside was the scope, a sunshade, lens caps, a battery, a hex wrench (for resetting the turrets) and a soft cloth that says Vortex on it. The scope was heavy but felt very well built.

Looking through the scope I was happy for the amount of light transfer through the scope. The AO adjustment was smooth and the turrets had a nice solid click to them. The magnification ring was really stiff but after about 5 or 6 turns it softened right out and is now perfect.

The illuminated reticle has 11 brightness settings and only illuminates the first few dots closest to the center. Very nice to use and I find myself using it more than not using it :p

At higher magnifications the scope isn't 100% clear. WAY better than the cheap Tasco Varmint. From what I seen though, if you tried using 24x at 100 yards, it was fuzzy, but use that 24x at say 500 yards, and it was clear.

So I took the rail and rings I picked up from Mysticplayer and mounted the scope onto my Savage 10 Precision Carbine and headed out to the range. I must say with the scope and sunshade attached, the scope goes to the very top of my stock :D

So I got it dialed in to 100 yards and it seemed to be doing well (my shooting was off that day). I was out of ammo so I put the rifle away somewhat disgusted with my groupings and left, telling myself I would try again another day. My second attempt was very decent at shooting and at 200 yards I was about 3-4" low (sighted in for 100).

About a week later I get a call from a friend to come up visiting and bring my rifle and my cannon. So I decided that I was going to just ABUSE this scope. I put my rifle into my hard case and stick it in the trunk of my car where it will feel every bounce and bump of gravel roads and any road construction. I then leave it outside in my trunk with the weather bouncing around like a kid with ADHD. First it was summer hot, then night with frost, then cold rain, then back to summer hot, then to warm overcast. Time to take it out shooting.

I was a little worried with everyone standing around oohing and aahing about the rifle that my scope would be out to the point I would embarrass myself. So my friend decides to be an ass and takes one of the golf balls I had for the cannon and stick it up on top of a oil jug on an embankment 100 yards away.

So I petted my scope, spoke soft words to it, loaded the rifle, took aim, and squeezed the trigger. The golf ball started bouncing down the hill. Crap. So I sheepishly admitted I missed and probably hit the jug it was sitting on. So my friend went to reset the ball and when he picked it up he was laughing, there dead center of the ball was a TINY perfect little entry hole and a nice little exit blast on the other wise (.223 FMJ). Perfect!

So I loaded up the mag again with 4 rounds and threw another into the chamber and my friend grabbed a rifle and we played a little game. We had an empty Blackpowder can throw up onto the same hill. He would shoot the can which would send it flying then when it landed I would have to shoot it. I never missed once.

So right now I am VERY happy with this scope and so far it's been doing 100% perfect! I can only wait and see on how long it will last but who knows how long.

Vortex has perfect customer service so I know that if it breaks down they will fix it or replace it without qualms.

Thanks for taking the time to write your thoughts on this scope. I'm glad to hear you are pleased with it. I just made the decision an hour ago to buy the non-illuminated MD version as a temporary scope for my .223, until the Viper 6-24X50 PST FFP arrives next year.

Still happy with the scope?

Hey Drache,
I have been looking at this scope and was just wondering if you are still happy with it? How has it held up after a couple of months? Would you still consider it a decent investment?
Thanks

Vortex Warranty/customer service?

I was just wondering drache, have you actually had to use the warranty on a Vortex scope? I currently have 2 vortex scopes, and while both are good/better-than-expected, I would just like to know incase something does happen. I have been told that some Vortex dealers (at least the place I bought mine from) have an over the counter warrantly and will take your buggered scope and hand you a new one provided they have it in stock.

FYI, the 4-12X40 Diamondback on a .300 Win Mag hasn't had a problem with the ~400 rounds I've put down the pipe in 2.5 years and , and the 6.5-20X44 Viper on my wanna-be tacticool .308 is really nice at the range.

Thanks, Scott

Bcook, my father had a Remington 700 in 7mm Rem Mag. For years my father never used it because the gun would fire two rounds dead on then any round after that was all over the place. More than a few people here stated that the rifle was bad even though I believed it was the scope that was on it.

When I sold my rifle the buyer didnt want the Vortex scope so my dad offered to buy it for this Remington to see if I was right about the scope being the problem.

I fired off an entire box and never left the one inch square at 200 yards. The scope has been on there since through hunting season and has always performed exactly as it should without any problems.

I am extremely happy with the scope and believed it's worth the money I paid for it. Im not sure who else makes a 6-24 variable scope with mildots for the same price.

As for the warranty, Ive never had to use it but everyone that I'd read who's used it was extremely happy. One guy DROPPED his rifle while at the range right onto the scope and Vortex still replaced the scope at their cost.

Here's my dad being silly while holding said rifle with said scope after a day of hunting:

That picture cracks me up.

How do you find vortex quality in relation to leupold? I know leupold has the name in the business, but mainly what sold me on them was the lifetime warranty, and vortex has that too.... no idea who wins the price war.

The Vortex product compares favourably with Leupold, and the Crossfire from Vortex is a lower priced product and would be of similar quality to most Leupold stuff in a similar price point. Pricing on Vortex is very good, the Viper 6.5-20X50 retails under $600 and it is an outstanding value for the money. Warranty is excellent, I have only ever needed it once and they were very good to deal with.

The Viper is going to be my next scope i played with one at wholesale sports, after i bought my strikefire by vortex and fell in love, wife told me i had to wait till after Christmas to buy another scope (lets hope Santa picks it up for me)

Drache,
Thanks for the info. That is good to hear. I just bought a new TC Venture in 22-250 and I am looking for some glass to put on it without breaking the bank. I think I will go ahead and order the crossfire. Thanks for your review!
bcook :)

I've had mine on the .223 for a while now. I have done some tracking tests and some 1000yd plinking with it and so far I'm impressed. It would be nice if it had a side focus knob instead of the objective barrel, but for the price it's a fantastic scope.

You have to get a Viper or Razor model line in order to get this feature.
