I will be back home from deployment soon and I want to buy me a new scope for my project VTR .223
I pretty much made my mind on the vortex scopes, I think, and right now i'm debating if i should get the 6-24X50 crossfire or the 6.5-20X44 Viper.
What I'm asking is is the viper worth the extra 200 some $ I think I would do just fine without the extra 4X magnification and 6mm diametre. I really like the side parralax of the viper... the rifle will be mostly used for medium range targets (100-500 M) and coyote hunting.

I have both scopes you mentioned. Both are great value for the money, however the Viper is the better scope by far. The clarity and brightness go downhill on the Crossfire when you get to the high end of the magnification, where I don't see that problem in the Viper. The Crossfire is great for the budget minded shooter, and will do a great job for you, but I would reccomend the 4-16X50 Illuminated Mil Dot Crossfire OR the Viper 6.5-20X50. Where are you located once you get home? I am near Kingston Ontario and you could have a look at mine if that would help. Let me know!

I live in Nova-Scotia so I won't be able to have a look at yours. I would really like the 6.5-20X50 viper but its another 100$ extra, the 44mm viper is already more than i was originaly looking at spending but I think the value is there. Does the extra 6mm really worth 100$? maybe at last light but then I can still see out off my 3-9x40's fine until the end off the legal hunting time. I've never had a decent 50 mm scope to try so I cant really compare.

If you have a budget, then yes I truly think the Crossfire would serve you very well. I do however like the 4-16 better, as I think the max 16X is better than 24X or 32X for brightness or clarity. Plus the 4-16 is available with the tres cool illuminated Mil Dot reticle, which I really llike.

Here's some feedback on the Crossfire.

I have the 6-24X50 MD Crossfire and a friend's 6.5-20X50 Viper. Both have pros and cons. As far as I'm concerned optical clarity is equal with both set to 20X. I prefer the MD reticle on the Crossfire over the standard crosshair on the Viper, and to my eyes the Crossfire reticle is also slightly sharper. I prefer the side focus on the Viper over the focus barrel on the Crossfire. The Viper can focus 50yd to ~ and the Crossfire can focus 10yd to ~. The Viper is definitely built better but doesn't have the features that I really want. I'd rather spend twice as much and buy the Viper PST or similar. For the price of The Crossfire I don't care about the right features. You can't beat it for $240. Hope that helps.

another difference in the 2 scopes is that the Crossfir line are nitrogen purged where the Vipers are filled with argon. the result will be better cold weather performance. the viper also sports better glass equaling more light transmission and acrisper clearer image, especially in low light. i have a viper on my deer gun and could not be happier.
