The Vortex Diamondback 3-9x40 and the CASM mount seem to be popular choices for scoping an M14 (which coincidentally I had decided on getting before reading most of the threads. Great minds think alike!), so I'm wondering what ring height you guys have used. I already have a set of these high mount rings laying around in my spare parts bin which I was going to use, but I'm wondering if any of you guys have used the medium or low Vortex rings with this setup.

As someone who just bough the sam e scope and want the CASM mount as well, i'll be keeping tabs on this thread:)

Yep, me too! I just received my CASM on Friday and Vortex 3-9x40 arriving at end of week. I have a set of quick detach low rings, can't remember make, that I plan on trying out. Off to fire my DA SOCOM 18 tomorrow see how it shoots before I swap out the rear sight. After reading all the negative comments on here, I hope I have one of the good ones! Lol...

I have this setup with the 4-12X40mm Diamondback and I use the Leupold quick detach low mounts. I still need a cheek riser to be comfortable.

I am also curious as to what negative comments were made?

The comments that I refer to are the various problems members seem to have with their new norinco/DA m14/305's.

Reading the various issues I pulled mine apart and so far everything looks good, except the front site is way to the right, but I see it's staked. Today I fired it with the last 10 rds Fed 168gr matchking .308 that I had, at 25 m, first rd off the target, next two were on the paper, then group 2" wide 2" high & right, last group about inch high to right, 2" wide. Very happy, wish I had more ammo! Can't wait for the vortex to arrive and do longer ranges. Only issue I had was a fail to feed due the the follower in the mag, not pushing rds up tight to feed lips.

Whoops, meant to say my 3.5-10X Diamondback.

These are capable rifles, with 168 macthkings you should be able to get 2" at 100m.

The lower the better, as the CASM puts you up pretty high on it's own. I believe with a 40mm objective lens, you will be fine with most low rings.
Even with low rings, you might need a cheek riser, so it makes sense to try your setup using the rings you have (save some $$$ for now!), mock up a cheek riser to suit those high rings then decide if you want to get lower rings to drop everything down.

That's what I would try anyways, always nice to recycle parts when you can!
