Vortex Diamondback rifle scopes -- what are they comparable to, optically?

Backstory:

So, I've been looking at the big honkin' (and expensive) 4-16 Nikon Monarch Mil-Dot that sits on my CZ Silhouette, and thinking I'd like to get something a little smaller and more compact these days (and little less expensive would be nice too -- but I would not want to give up too much in terms of optical quality). Since I wanted to stay in something that still had an adjustable objective and low-profile target turrets, that drastically limited the options, so much so that it looks like the clear winner is the 4-12 Vortex Diamondback with their little BDC reticle thingy (not exactly a mil-dot, but I can still use the dots for hold-over whilst small game hunting, which is all I really wanted mil-dots for anyway).

Now, in the binocular lines, I have compared Vortex Diamondback's and Nikon Monarchs, and found them to be so close to each other in terms of optical quality, that my less than perfect eyes can't really tell the difference (not even in low light). The Wife(tm) and I both pack Diamondback binos while hunting the last 2 years, and have been totally, completely happy with them. So, my initial thoughts would be, that the Diamondback rifle scopes would probably make me pretty happy too (especially for the $$$, compared to what I've got in this Nikon).

Question:

However, despite what I know about the binocular lines (they're awesome!) -- I don't know where on the riflescope scale the Diamondback falls for optical quality. So my question is, to those who might know: about what (approximately) class of scope is the Vortex Diamondback comparable to? Nikon Monarch? Buckmasters? Bushnell 3200? 4200?

And, if you happen to have any personal knowledge of the 4-12AO Diamondback, I'd like to know what you have to say about it.

Thanks,

Vipers are suppose to be the best buy for quality versus cost.

Suppose to be around quality of vx3 etc.

Yah, I know about the Vipers being top notch stuff (the Bino's I've looked through were, anyway - very nice glass at almost any price point, but under $1k !?!?!?! -- sweet!), but I was thinking I didn't need glass quite that nice for my 22LR. Something comparable to a Bushnell 3200/Nikon Buckmasters would suffice -- though I would obviously be happier if it were more comparable to say, a Bushnell 4200 or a Nikon Monarch.

Viper 3-9x40. $250

I think you're looking at a Diamondback, or you're looking at someplace I'm not aware of that has insanely low prices (if so, where would that be, pray tell?). Last time I looked -- in Canada -- a 3-9x40 Viper lists for around $400, and the 4-12AO that I would be interested in is $500 and change (plus tax and shipping). It's not that that kind of money is out of the question, I'm just kind of thinking that the Diamondback (if comparable in optical quality to the Diamondback binoculars I already own) would be plenty adequate for use on a 22LR.

I own the scope you're looking at. It is comparable to the Nikon Monarch my buddy uses (but we both prefer the Vortex), as well as the Burris FFII.

GREAT buy, and great warranty.

You won't be disappointed, unless of course you're comparing its performance to that of a $2000 Euro scope...

I have the Vortex Viper 3.5-10x50mm with the BDC. It's rocking on my m14 with over 300 rounds in one sitting and still ticking. The optic's are supper clear & crisp plus the best feature of all is the turret's. It's like using the Ziess turrets and we all know how nice the Ziess turrets are.

That sounds like what I was hoping it might be. I'm not a high end glass snob, by any means, I just like my scopes to not suck, optically. I've been totally happy with the Monarch for optical quality; I could even step down just a whisker and still be happy. By the time the glass gets as good as a Leupy VXII/Bushnell 4200/Nikon Buckmasters/etc -- it's usually good enough for me.

Next question though -- those little "mini target turrets" they have on the Diamondback's -- do they have horizontal hash marks on them, or do you have to count turret revolutions when you dial them up/down?

Thanks,
