Vortex dissapoints

Just got to try out my brand new viper hs-t 4-16, on my remmy 700 30-06. I was very happy with the scope quality ect. Until me and my buddy were comparing what we can see at 200 meters. His mark 4, 4.5x14 could differentiate between two bullet holes stacked ontop eachother, and my viper looked like one whole, with very careful examination, two wholes were somewhat noticeable at best. Im contemplating returning my purchase, as his cheaper lower power scope out performed mine. First and foremost, good glass is paramount, bells and whistles come second. CGN, im looking to you for some ideas, since i believed i had made a smart puchase. Lesson learned, you cant believe the hype.
 
While I'm no expert, the hst is about half the price of a Mark 4 isn't it or am I out to lunch ?

We are talking about a leupold mark 4 vs a vortex hst correct ?
 
Lol. I own a few vortex scopes and know that comparing a Leupold Mark 4 to Vortex's 3rd tier scope line (PST and Razor are higher tier) is not going to make you feel better about your HST glass. HST is still a good scope though
 
I have a PST and an HST both 6-24x50 both great scopes and a lot of bang for your buck. I have no problem seeing 223 holes at 300yds with both.
 
To savagecanuck do you notice any difference in glass quality between the hst and the pst ? I have a hst and looked through buddy's pst , couldn't tell the diff really but scope was sitting different and his focus was probably set different

The PST is slightly better. It's mostly the reticle difference for me. The PST has a finer illuminated glass etched reticle. The HST reticle is a little thicker and not glass etched. Both of mine are the moa, but I usually don't use the hash marks. I prefer to crank the turrets while my shooting partner spots my shots. I love the audible firm clicks on the turrets and they are identical on both scopes. For me for the price point on either is reasonable but I wish the parallax went lower than 50 yds. I have the HST currently on my anshutz 64 for bench rest @50 yds. The PST is on my Tikka t3 varmint 223. I also have a sightron big Sky in 6-24 I prefer the vortex myself.
 
The Vortex brand has a large following and they make a pretty wide range of scopes to suit budget choices. For me the Viper PST is their best value and I guess it is their lower second/upper third tier offering with the OP's HST sitting a little bit lower of the totem. Comparing a Viper - whether it be a PST or a HST to a Leupold Mk4 isn't a fair comparison as the MK4 is a much higher priced offering that is better compared to a Vortex Razor.

A suggestion for the OP would be to consider something like a Sightron Siii 8-32x56; better glass than the Viper (either PST or HST ) and less money than a Mk4.

BTW, I own Viper PST, Sightron Siii and Leupold Mk4
 
Only thing I dont like about the HST that I dont like at the moment, is the elevation turrets aint totally aligned when you turn 180+ degrees. The clicks and lines are kind of off.

Do they start lined up and then when you dial up they end up off, or are they off from the start and it just needs to be adjusted?
 
I'm disappointed that my Honda Fitt is not as sweet s my pal's C class. This is about budget not Vortex.
