Do you need to index a Vortex FH on an AR? Some have crush washers, some don't...what's the deal?

Since we're on the subject, how about a KAC QD M4 FH? It came with a bunch of peel washers, how exactly are they used?

You have to "time" the flash hider. It is a trail and error process that involves torqueing and removing peels until the flash hider is in line with the barrel or front sight. Ideally, the flat edges should be on the left and right once it is timed.
Lengthy process, but a lot better than the crush washer approach.
YMMV,
Hoddie.

KAC's "Peel Washers" are actually different dimensional shims.

each is a differnt dimension -- you add and subtract the combo to index the M4QD -- and then affixed with the gasket sealant provided.

KAC QD Flash Hider should have come with a set of washers that are of varying thicknesses. They do not peel, you just keep going through the set until you find the one that indexes the slots properly.

Thanks alot guys, getting ever closer to that Mk 18 clone. ;)
Kevin, what exactly is a gasket sealant, here is the entire kit:

One more thing, how precise does the "timing" have to be? I assume it has to be lined up visually with the FSB with the ports facing upward and mounted tight, is that good enough?

Cheers.

The sealant comes in the clear(ish) small bottle. - I will take a pic of it when I get to Vegreville tonight (In Ft Mac visiting MikeH)

Timing is via the Mk1 Eye Ball

Mine was bought second-hand and didn't come with the sealant, I could still get it to work though?

After struggling a bit with the factory A2 I managed to index the KAC properly:

Thanks again for the advice.

Would someone explain indexing, timing as it pertains to flash hider installation....

If the vents go all the way around , as long as its on tight, does it really matter where the flats end up ?

The flash vents are not symetrical on these so they need to be 'timed' they are made with the vents to be ontop so it helps to steady to fire as the gases help to push the barrel down and make your return shots more steady.

Its more for the 6' alignment cut for the KAC M4QDNT4 Supperssor

Surefire has the same timing requirement -- although they have a neat sheet to help -- it goes over the bll and shows you which shims you need to add to get it to 6'.

And once you have the SF sheet it works for the KAC one...
