Vortex or Burris? Can I get your opinion this please?

So I have a Colt LE6920 coming through mail soon and I wanted to get your opinion on what optics to choose. I am an ACOG user/fan and usually that would be my first choice but lately I've been looking into 1-4x scopes as opposed to the fixed 4x.

There are 2 scopes that have caught my attention:

1. Vortex VIPER PST

Help me pick between the two please as I have no prior experience with either one of them. I'm even open to a third option you'd suggest! (including not buying an FNX-45 TAC and going with another ACOG)


And if you wonder what I'll be using the rifle for then I'll have to say that it won't be going on duty with me and I'm not going to compete with it. But I do enjoy target practicing over and including 100 yards.

I havent used that specific Burris, but ive owned many of their optics as well as a couple vortex vipers. Id give the edge to vortex. Their clarity is really impressive and its tough to beat their warrenty policy.
 
I have the Viper on my AR, and use it for 3-gun. I believe it's great value for the money. I've never used the burris, but I believe that having a red dot as well as a 1-4 is somewhat redundant. I run a secondary red dot on my rig, because it allows two different distances sighted in, but I never switch my Viper off 4X. If you have the 1-4 sighted in at 100 yards, then switch it to single power for close up targets, your POA-POI will be way off. I don't like having to worry about holdover to engage targets directly in front of me, hence the red dot. I wish someone made a nice, light fixed 6X. If the ACOG was lighter and less expensive, I would get one in a heartbeat.
 
I just traded my Burris for a Vortex, I liked the reticle better and was surprised at the quality you get for the money with vortex.
 
I had a burri 536 fixed 5 x and the reticle was to thick for my liking. I'm not sure if they have the same reticle,but from looking at som pics it appears they do.
 
I say skip the tac30 and go for the mtac if you chose burris ,the switch to turn on the illuminated reticle on the mtac is leaps and bound ahead of the tac30. Also on the tac30 the objective bell turn to change magnification making it a bit less practical to use flip up caps. I have a tac30 1-4, it's really clear and the turrets are precise.

I had a burris ar332 , I sold it the low light performance wasn't good.

I have a burris e1 3-9x40 on a 308 and I like it low light performance is really good and turrets are really positive.

I also have a burris e1 in 2-7x35, I bought it cause of the performance of my 3-9x40. I did not get the chance to test the low light. But I will say the turrets feel a bit mushy compared to my 3-9x40.

I also had a vortex diamonback 3-9x40. Turrets were mushy and the eye relief was so finicky it was almost unusable at higher then 6x.

Now I do not expect the con's of the burris and vortex I mention to be a blanket statement for both brands has the 2 scope you ponder are the better quality in the brand.

I can not speak oj the viper quality has I haven't handle one but I will say this I have heard good about it and the vortex reticle is more suited to 100-400yard shot were the burris reticle is faster at close range due to it's illuminated donut and probably faster at long range due to it's bdc calibrated for 556 , but les precise then the vortex due to dot size.
 
I have a couple Burris scopes and just bought my first Vortex. I've been very impressed with the glass in Burris scopes but so far the Vortex Viper PST seems to be very nice for an under $1000 scope. I've never looked through them back to back but as stated earlier the Vortex warranty is hard to beat.
I have a Burris Fullfield 2-7 and an older 4-12x44 laser rangefinder scope (pre eliminator) and both have great glass. My Viper PST is a 4-16x50. Happy with all of them but use them all for different things. The 2-7 is the only one that ever see's an AR though. The 4-16 Vortex is probably going on my 24 inch barrel AR-10 when it shows up but that's a little different than a tactical AR-15

If you like the idea of a 1-4 also have a look at the Sightron 1-7x24. It's under $1000 and it's a true 1x on the bottom making both eyes open during CQB stuff easier and having 7 on the top end will make bench shooting out to 200-300 hundred yards much nicer

Sightron has great glass and Jerry is a good guy to deal with. My SIII was at my house within a week of ordering it.

Don't want to take away from your asking about the two scope you named but I really think you should give this video review a look and consider the Leatherwood Hi-Lux CMR Scope. I have this scope and it is reasonably priced and performs excellent. Review is from the Military Arms Channel and he knows his equipment.

Funny I was just looking at those today!

It's hard to tell 100% from pictures but here is one from mystic site and I don't know, it might just be me, but for the price shouldn't the picture look better? It doesn't really look true 1x there and also it seem really bubbles like look at the one shot logo and double tap logo.

You're looking at a picture taken with a phone through a scope of a computer screen. You don't actually expect it to look good do you? Take that scope outside and look at something 300 yards away and then look through any other scope at any price range and you'll see how good the glass is.
My sightron scope is almost as clear and crisp as my nightforce. I would take a Sightron over anything out there in the $1000 and under price range and it challenges scopes worth much more for optical clarity and sharpness.
I was using my Sightron SIII at 1100 yards last month and the image was crisp and clear and I could easily see the gongs and paper targets we had put out. I think they are the best bang for the buck scope available right now.
