Vortex Razor 1-6! Anyone got one yet?

Hey Bearkilr, I certainly don't disagree with your position that the Vortex stuff does not have a long track record and I was skeptical, like you, of spending big money on a relatively new company but after looking thru the various Vortex scopes and starting out with the 1-4 PST, I now own a 5-20 Razor HD, which is an amazing piece. I did look at the new 1-6 that P and D has and it is impressive for sure, even at that price point.

I've had a couple of Vortex Vipers, an HS 4-16x50LR which was nothing spectacular for $800+ and a Viper 3-9x40 which is on par or better than scopes costing double or more. Their glass seems to be hit and miss, for whatever reason. Given that, if I'm going to spend in the neighborhood of $2000 for a scope, it's going to be Zeiss,Leica,Swarovski or S&B. I think Vortex has done well in value for price in the mid range market, but they're charging too much for a new player in the high end market. Leupold has tried it for years with their LPS,VX7 and now VX6 and has failed, so far. Regardless of optical clarity or quality of parts, if you don't have the reputation, you can't play with the big boys.

Bearkilr, I certainly won't argue with the quality and reputation of S and B, etc, and for their cost I do think that they are good value in a life long investment but after doing a bunch of looking and shopping and comparing, I did decide that the high end Vortex was at the very least the equal of the Nightforce and, to my eyes, better. I don't feel that just because they are a newer company, they can't be as good. Certainly it was a close comparison to the NXS, but I felt the Vortex was superior. If you couple that to Vortex's best in industry warranty, then in my opinion there's no reason to not consider them as very compatible products. I have the same feelings about the Vortex 1-6 HD, compared to my PST 1-4 or the same mag Nightforce, and for 1500$, the Vortex looks better and cheaper then the same mag Nightforce to my eyes..
It is also true that all these high end scope comparisons have a high degree of subjective and personal preference which is why there are more then 1-2 high end manufacturers, every shooter chooses what works best for their eyes. I am also sure I'd be very happy with the Nightforce stuff, just liked the Vortex stuff a bit more for a bit less cash.

@Canucklehead: Yeah man that's me! We had a solid rifle-zone going with the guys in there for most of that evening eh?

Video review is forthcoming! Going to take the jeep out through the snow-drifts into the mountains this weekend and get some filming done.

The short news is: I like this scope a lot. It does everything I've ever wanted from a powered scope and then some. Although I can't wait for my throw lever! I use a lever on all my PSTs, but the Razor one isn't here yet.

I was checking out the 1x6 razor HD this afternoon. It is a nice optic. Was comparing it to the swarovski z6 1x6. Both were crystal clear and had fantastic illumination. Either could work for CQB like an aim point. For $1000 less the Vortex is certainly a winner. It is built like a tank and probably weighs 1/3 more than the z6. I think the vortex will be the new optic for my ACR.

Running the Viper PST 6-24 FFP on a Sendero. 1 G all in and Fab to look thru. If you shoot long distance and are not an algebra Professor, spend the extra few $$$ and get the First Focal Plane.

Its a good thing you keep on me OICU812, or I'd forget :p

I've filmed the first half of the video review. I was really happy with how the scope did when shooting service rifle on Sunday. Ideally I'd like to have the video edited and uploaded by wednesday!
