Hey guys, a good friend of mine is considering a .308 for some long range target/hunting fun, and has decided he wants a Vortex. There are 2 he has his eye on, they are;

Viper HS 6-24x50, long range

PST 6-24x50, illuminated reticle

Now, my centerfire experience limits-out with .223, so I'm not in a great position to make a suggestion one way or another. My hunch is, it will be used in field conditions, off a rest/bipod, carried less than a mile or two at a time, and used at distances between about 200-500 yards.

Which model would you suggest of these 2 (or something in a comparable price range), and who might have the best price on them?

Thanks!

I have the PST model he is looking at and it is a great scope. I have had no issues with glass or tracking at all. I have not fired 100's of rounds through it but a friend has the same scope and has had no issues, that's why I got mine.

That being said I also had (just sold) a Sightron of the same magnification and I think the glass was better than the Vortex.

If he is set on the Vortex I don't think he will regret his decision going with the PST

I have spoken with Vortex and the 6-24-50 PST & HS LR are the exact same scope, just different reticles. If you really got you heart set on the HS LR your probably going to wait another month or two. I've been hounding them and was on a waiting list for the first one to come in but they haven't put out a release date yet. As hunting season is hear I cancelled my order and bought a PST

The HS LR has 1/2 MOA adjust on the elevation-too much for me. I have the HS 4-16-50 with capped turret-used 20 MOA bases and now have 38 MOA up. I have the PST 2-24-50 as well-great scope, a little overkill for most hunting applications but a good scope.

I would go with the PST, now you need to choose FFP or SFP. Although Sightron does not make a FFP, I have heard the glass is better, albeit marginally. If it were my money, I'd think hard on "what" I'm hunting, in hindsight (always!) the 4-16-50 Vortex is a perfect hunting tool.

To put it in perspective, I have a Burris FFII 4.5x14x42 and am printing 3" groups at 450yds with relative ease from the bench. Unless your a gopher hunter, you won't need the 24x.

Always nice to have some extra power if you need it.

Yep. In my area, I am generally reaching out maximum 350 yds (coyotes). So a 16x is more than enough, especially when the hash marks on a SFP are only "instantly" relevant at the highest magnification (16x for my Vortex HS).

The beauty of a FFP, is that in quick decision hunting scenarios, regardless of magnification you can use the reticle for holdover and be dead-on confident. That's why I went FFP PST, split seconds mean dead coyote or another farm animal down.
