Hey guys, here's my problem:

Firearm: sks
Mount: bc tactical
Optic: vortex sparc

Note: the previous vism greendot/laser combo mounted tightly and held zero.

I have the bc tactical mount and a vortex sparc. I am attempting to mount the sparc - but it's simply not tight enough - at full adjustment.

Either the mount is too thin, or the optic piece is too wide.

When fully seated, I can still slide the mount around. It's not even grabbing the other side (this is a test, I know I need the screw in there). With the screw in place, the optic simply sits loose and wobbles around.

Can someone maybe provide some insight?

Update:

Going to bring the mount into the store where I purchased the sparc to see if any other optics mount properly.

This is to determine if either the mount is too big, or if the optic portion/ claw is too big.

Got a question.
Did you try unscrewing the bolt that locks the red dot to the rail so you could slip it on?
Just saying that cause it worked with every optic I have ever heard of including this 1. Here is the SkS with this mount and even a Trijicon RMR

My Sparc fits my BC Tac rail just fine.

1: Remove bolt
2: Position Red dot
3: Fit bolt
4: Tighten

I don't have the rifle at work, so the best i could do was stick the rail in a vice (soft jaws) and give it a bit of a wiggle by hand. No movement.

Yeah, it's just a matter of finding out if my vortex sparc or the bc tactical mount is out of spec.

Thanks guys.

For anyone with the bc tactical mount and calipers - can you measure the width?

So after some examination, i actually did have some play in my setup.

Turns out it was between the weaver mount and the Sparc.

Fixed with the addition of a 0.2mm spacer under the weaver mount.

I had a similar problem with a $50 aimpoint micro clone but it was the rds mount that was out of spec. The small block that the bolt threads into to tighten the mount on the rail would not seat deep enough to tighten so I had to grind a little off specific parts of it. Have a look at the sparc's mount and see if this might be the problem. My BCT mount didnt have problems with other mounts like the strikefire's ring

That's exactly what it appears to be for me as well. The small block that tightens, if some material was removed, would fit and secure mount. But I don't want to ruin warranty.

Mount the optic further back, the mounts taper near the front & can interfere with fit. Watch the optic doesnt get hit by the ejected shells!

It has play in all the groves.
I can literally wiggle / shake the optic in every notch. It rattles.
Does it rattle before you tighten down the cross bolt?
Cause this mount design is just like my trs-25 and it works just fine?

Nope. It doesn't rattle prior to mounting. The optics are solid.
The bc tactical mount is also solid - and the green dot by vism it came with was also rock solid installed (the only issue was windage knob would only adjust a few clicks).

I know that it *should* fit.

The sparc mounted on two separate AR rails rock solid.

My bc tactical mount did measure slightly smaller than the rails on the AR.

I'm stumped but I'm working with both mount and optics vendors to figure out which is the problem..

Yes, it *should* mount, by the looks of everything.

Does anyone actually have a sparc mounted to their bc tactical mount?

Biopace had the same problem with his Sparc on the BC tactical mount. We shimmed it with some .002mm shims between the mount and the scope and all play ceased immediately.

It doesn't sound like it Al.

His play is not between the Sparc and it's own weaver mount, but between the weaver mount and the BC Tactical mount - at least that's the way it sounds to me.

BTW - it was 0.2mm shims, not 0.002mm shims.

Ok folks, here's the update:

For those of you who don't know, the vortex sparc comes with these mounting options:

The red dot optic (obviously)

1.) Low rise optic mount.
2.) Thin spacer for a small amount of rise if required (like less than a cm).
3.) High rise optic mount (apprx 1inch height).

So the sks with the BC Tactical mount, the low rise mount is the option best suited. It allows a cheek weld.

This is the mount I tried to install, with no luck. When fully tightened, it wiggles freely.

So I decided I would try the high rise mount, just to see if there was any difference in IT's mounting.

It mounted. Rock solid. Sadly, it's way too high for use on this set up.

So, I called up vortex and explained the problem. They took my name and mailing address and have sent me a new low rise mount. Just like that. Not only that but we chatted about our two countries export / import laws and how they are facing *significant* red tape in sending their products to Canada.

I digress.

The new low rise mount is in the mail, and I'll advise if I have anymore luck with the new piece!

(Best warranty in the business in my humble opinion).

OK, so it probably WAS the same issue i had. Mine looked like the bolts supplied were bottom out on the Sparc before they tightened up the low ride mount all the way.

Glad to hear that you got it sorted.

No, my 4 bolts tighten all the way, the optics are firmly attached to the mount.
It's the cross bolt that doesn't pull the "claw" tight. Or even make any contact for that matter.

As soon I have the net (next weekish) I'll post pictures for anyone interested.
