Thinking about maybe picking one of these up for a xmas present for my brother for a 12 gauge, how do the hold up? Anything else I should look at?

I think this will be my next red dot,

The Sparc II fixes the control layout over the original Sparc and it's pretty good but I like the idea of a red dot with a battery life expressed in years instead of days.

Both have lifetime warranties and in the case of the vortex the warranty is transferable and their warranty service is painless.
Hard to say what the warranty service of the holosun's will be....

They also have a solor model coming out soon and one that has the battery compartment on the side and uses aimpoint micro acces.

I am due to crank out a report for the Sparc2 and I'm still rocking one on my CQB go-to rifle. I'm loving this unit for the money! :D

You won't be disappointed!

Cheers and keep helping them nooobs out there!

It's ok I guess. I just sold mine, and wouldn't buy another one again. When it worked, it worked. But I had it replaced 3 times in 2 years.
I will say though, their warrenty service is the best I've ever experienced. I didn't even have to mail it away, all three times Vortex arranged for me to just take it back to the dealer I got it from, and they handed me a new one.
But again, I did have to replace it 3 times....

In this day and age, a red dot should have a battery life in the tens of thousands of hours. SPARC's fall way short.

Yup, but they cost $200 instead of $800 (like an Aimpoint) and they're one of the only budget RDS that don't washout in bright light.

I've has an original SPARC on my shrt AR for three years with no issues... That said, I've not run it on a 12g, so I don't know if it'll stand up.
