Today I picked up a Vortex Strike Eagle 4-24x50 scope to mount on my Ruger Precision Rifle. I thought I would put my initial thoughts on here in case anyone is interested.

First off, was it what I wanted? Of course not! I wanted a Night Force or a Schmidt & Bender. But did it fit my budget? Yep $700. Couldn't afford much more than that right now. Will it work for what I'm going to use it for? You bet. I only shoot paper for fun at 100 to 300 yards. So I thought I would give it a try.

In the box was the scope, a shade, an allen wrench, a lens cleaning cloth, and a bikini style lens cover. The first thing I noticed was the bikini cover. It's a goofy rubber thing that seems kind of cheap, but at this price point I guess somethings gotta give. I'll replace it with some flip up covers.

Now the scope itself. What do I like? Well the price point of course. Looking through it, the glass is very clear. Everything is bright and clear. The reticle is etched, which I like, but it is second focal plane. I would have preferred a first focal plane scope, but maybe next time. The reticle subtensions are accurate at the highest magnification and that is where this scope will basically be at 99% of the time. So like I said, it will work for me. The reticle is a little busy. But I hope I get used to it. It is also a lighted reticle. I don't know if that will be useful or not. I will play around with it and see. I've never had one before. I've only had scopes with hunting reticles.

What don't I like? The aforementioned bikini cover and second focal plane reticle. The side focus knob doesn't have numerical distance marks. Might be a small thing but it makes no sense to me. And the turrets clicks feel a little mushy. If that makes sense? It still clicks for each 1/4 MOA but it's not a crisp click, its a mushy click. It won't effect the operation, its just something I noticed.

So I guess the real trial will be in using it. I'll get it mounted tomorrow and I'm hoping to be out shooting on Sunday, if it stops raining.

If anyone has one of these as well, please post your thoughts and findings on this scope.

Awesome, will follow with interest. I can't afford the supermega Clinton money scopes either so leupold and vortex are the best bang for the money I find. I guess these guys are expanding the strike eagle line? Just a while back it was only the 1-6, no?

Ya, they've added this one and a 3-18x44. I've heard good and bad about Vortex. People seem to love em or hate em. I'm hoping mine is a good one. I had a Sparc II on my AR for a while and I was happy with it. Got my fingers crossed that this one will be okay too.

Well I got it mounted this morning. Wasn't sure if I should go with 1.25 or 1.5 inch rings. I ended up buying Burris Xtreme Tactical extra high rings. Burris says they are 1.6 inches. I think they look a little high, but I'll give them a try and we'll see what happens. It's too cold out and there are three football games on TV today so I'm still hoping to get out tomorrow.

Made it out to the range today and sighted in the new scope. I must say, for what I'm going to use it for, I'm impressed so far. Put 55 rounds down range and I really like the clarity. The lighted reticle really did nothing for me so I doubt it will get turned on again.

So if your like me and aren't going to be shooting out to 1,000 yards, or in competition I would say have a look at this unit. As long as it holds up, I think I'll be happy with it.

Never owned a strike eagle before. I have had a few Vipers though. None of them tracked correctly and two of them wouldn’t hold zero.

Anyways my point is you might want to test use it a lot before you decide it’s okay. They have a tendency to lose zero. It’s very common.Often people blame themselves and don’t realize that the scope is screwed.

I have several vortex scopes and never had a problem. There are 4 of them on my rifles right now. I pretty much only buy vortex and leupold. I really like your setup an am looking for a simuler setup.

I also recently bought the same scope , I can say so far I am fairly impressed , as far the A’s the mushy clicks you describe I don’t find them to be like that at all, mine are a fairly crisp click. However what I’m most impressed with is it’s advertised at 80moa of elevation adjustment in reality it actually has 105moa of adjustment

These are actually kind of neat in that they have a wide magnification range, and are fairly lightweight for what they are. In contrast to other scopes in the same size and magnification range they are very competitive in weight and price.

While I can't say they are ideal for a mid/long range mountain rifle style rig, this may be the best of two worlds for a lightweight prairie hunting (deer/antelope) in open terrain for something of higher mag and decent weight.

This 4-24x50 is on my want list. I'm building a Light short rifle that this seems to be ideal for.

So, how is the tracking of it. Say, you go from 100 to 300, then back to 200, then to 300 and back to 100m. The moment you do all of this, not only tracking itself reveals how accurate it is but also the function of parallax and if you change magnification, it may/not inject another variable. Even better would be a box test at 200m. This is the way I inspect my scopes and it tells me pretty quickly if I own good glass or not. I would be very curious how Strike eagle performs when you do all of this.

I have only went between 100 and 200 yards but have not had an issue to date.

That's not bad, he actually did pretty objective test and yes, those flyers towards the end were most likely caused by heat rising from barrel. Tell you what, why don't you let us know when you accumulate some mileage on your scope.

Well I've gotten more than a few rounds down range with this scope and I'm happy to say I have not had any issues at all. I like this scope so much I bought another to put on my Savage 12FV 308. I have seen some folks talking about issues with this model but with the two I have, I have seen no problems at all. It seems to me most of the complaints come from folks who pay $800 for a scope and are angry they didn't end up with a Night Force or Schmidt & Bender. It's a good, solid scope for the price.

I see europtic in the US has these for sale right now for $299USD... I need to figure out how to bring one up with moderate export costs.

Two sponsors on here offer ITAR export assistance. Check prices and factor currency exchange. I've already looked into this for a Strike Eagle 3-18x44, at the same price. For example:

$300USD = ~$400CDN
$10USD shipping =~$14CDN
$50CDN import fee from sponsor
$20 shipping from sponsor to ON

$400 + 14 + 50 + 20 = $484, which is close enough to $500.

Compared to $817.80CDN on Amazon.ca + taxes. IIRC a sponsor on here has them for around $600.

Know that the Strike Eagle line is discontinued. Even some people close to Vortex told me in confidence that if I could afford it, go with a Viper or Razor for the better glass. When I told them this price, their response was, "Then buy it at that price."

So, I looked into irunguns first:

"unfortunately we do not carry Vortex products. You can do a 3rd party import for products we don't carry but the fee for that service is $225 CAD for up to 50lbs of part/accessories so I'm not sure it would really be worth it for a $300 scope.

We have many other models in that price range that are much better quality: https://www.irunguns.com/optics/scopes

Let me know if you see something you like and I can provide a total cost including shipping and tax. We have a free US-to-Canada shipping promo starting tomorrow at 0900, so if you order between then and Tuesday, you can save $34 CAD on the order total. "

I emailed euro optic and they are taking care of export paperwork free of charge, just purchased one, $299 + $65 USD ship +36CAD customs/fees, info in other import thread.

Edit: it arrived, more info in a separate thread....

I'm into this for $521 CAD delivered.

(Edit: my forward of a message from irunguns is in no way meant as a criticism, but to identify actual costs, if it is preferred by the sponsor or site that this information is not shared in this format or in my post please let me know and I'll edit or remove it)
