Today I picked up a Vortex Strike Eagle 4-24x50 scope to mount on my Ruger Precision Rifle. I thought I would put my initial thoughts on here in case anyone is interested.
First off, was it what I wanted? Of course not! I wanted a Night Force or a Schmidt & Bender. But did it fit my budget? Yep $700. Couldn't afford much more than that right now. Will it work for what I'm going to use it for? You bet. I only shoot paper for fun at 100 to 300 yards. So I thought I would give it a try.

In the box was the scope, a shade, an allen wrench, a lens cleaning cloth, and a bikini style lens cover. The first thing I noticed was the bikini cover. It's a goofy rubber thing that seems kind of cheap, but at this price point I guess somethings gotta give. I'll replace it with some flip up covers.
Now the scope itself. What do I like? Well the price point of course. Looking through it, the glass is very clear. Everything is bright and clear. The reticle is etched, which I like, but it is second focal plane. I would have preferred a first focal plane scope, but maybe next time. The reticle subtensions are accurate at the highest magnification and that is where this scope will basically be at 99% of the time. So like I said, it will work for me. The reticle is a little busy. But I hope I get used to it. It is also a lighted reticle. I don't know if that will be useful or not. I will play around with it and see. I've never had one before. I've only had scopes with hunting reticles.
What don't I like? The aforementioned bikini cover and second focal plane reticle. The side focus knob doesn't have numerical distance marks. Might be a small thing but it makes no sense to me. And the turrets clicks feel a little mushy. If that makes sense? It still clicks for each 1/4 MOA but it's not a crisp click, its a mushy click. It won't effect the operation, its just something I noticed.
So I guess the real trial will be in using it. I'll get it mounted tomorrow and I'm hoping to be out shooting on Sunday, if it stops raining.
If anyone has one of these as well, please post your thoughts and findings on this scope.
