Vortex Viper PST - Worth it to wait for EBR-2C MRAD?

Hi everyone.

I'm thinking about a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP.

I just got off the phone with Vortex Canada, and they told me that the new EBR-2C reticle won't be available in Canada until May of this year. Grouse River gave a date of June, but I'm assuming that's adding in their lead time to get stock from Vortex. They also have the EBR-1 reticle in stock today, so I could have my scope in a few days if I wanted.

June seems a long way off. I have disposable income, and things that need shooting, right now.

Is it worth the wait for the new reticle? One thing I really, really like about it is the open space in the middle. Seems to me that's important for an FFP scope where the crosshairs can wind up covering up a portion of the target. But I'm a noob so what do I know.

This would be strictly for precision target shooting at known ranges, and eventually for tactical shooting competitions at unknown ranges (so I do want the FFP feature).

I've never looked through a Vortex FFP scope so I'm unsure how thick their reticles are. I do have a Leupold Mark 4 ER/T 6.5-20x50 which is FFP and I have the TMR reticle in it which has an open center as well. I haven't shot the rifle past 200 yards with this scope yet but at 100 yards I was able to shoot push pins due to that gap. If you're in a rush the Leupold is a fantastic optic, I'd highly recommend it. From what I've seen so far the tracking is spot on and the glass is excellent. The Vortex Razor also has a reticle with the open center in it as well which is similar to the one that will be in the Viper PST.

I'll take a look at the Leupold. The Razor is a bit out of my price range though.. I wish I could afford one. I played with one at the Vortex booth at a recent show and it was built like a tank.

EDIT: Wholesale Sports has the Leupold for $2800.. if that's the one we're talking about then it's almost three times the prices of the Viper PST. Also a little out of my price range :)

That one has the Horus reticle which makes it more expensive than Leupold's own TMR. I managed to find a really good deal on mine which made it in between the PST and the Razor. Here is the 4.5-14 model on Wolverine's site. If I'm not mistaken the Sightron FFP optic has a smaller circle in the center of their reticle for a more precise aiming point, and I believe the Bushnell BTR mil reticle has something similar. Might be worth a look.

OK, I'll have a look at those, too. Thanks.

I have a Viper PST 4-16 FFP with EBR-1 MRAD reticle and it find it great! Haven't had any issues with shooting from close up out to 850 yards(farthest i have shot). I like using the 0.2 mil graduations on the outside edge of the reticle for measuring and it always works out when an impact is off center to measure it and re-adjust on the turrets. I am glad that i went with the FFP model as i don't have to worry what magnification i am on. I usually shoot by myself and don't have a spotter so i like to dial my magnification back a bit which helps me get back on target quicker after recoil and spot my hits. For my purposes(long range hunting and shooting steel) 16x is plenty for me to shoot the distances i shoot. Most of the time im dialed between 12-14 power and find that comfortable. At full power i find the eye relief to be a bit touchy, and the image a small bit darker. Hope this helps
