Burris make some nice optics but the fullfield lV is more comparable to the vortex crossfire than the diamondback. If it was still the fullfield ll I would go for it. They were a nice scope at a good price.
before even thinking about looking at vortex, much less purchasing one.
Yea, they have a great warranty, but it sucks not having a scope on your rifle when you have to send one in for any kind of work. Of all my years of abuse on scopes, I have yet to send one in for warranty. My own incompetency, yes, I had a NF I sent in for work, and go it back 3 months later, at no charge. It was clearly my fault for the work required, but still came back fixed, no charge. I timed it through the winter though, so I would not be without an optic.
And yes I happen to use the burris HD, and have both the 2-10 and 3-15x44.
I have heard too many nightmare stories of vortex scopes malfunctioning. I have owned a crossfire, and a viper and just was not impressed.
I have been banging around an old burris fullfield 3-9 for about 15 years and not a problem. I even over tightened the rings on a fancy one piece mount, which squished the tube, and it still works perfectly.
I don't do any precision or low light shooting, pretty much just competition (Like 3-gun). I had Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6s on a few guns, and replaced them with Burris RT-6s. Better comparable scope for less money, IMO.
Make a list what is important to you, like eye box, clarity, reticle etc, check out feedbacks on cabelas and opticsplanet, reviews on youtube, maybe something else will be better for you. Having said that, yes Burris is better. Saw some Burris Fullfield IV on gb with illumination for quite nice prices.
I've had a few Vortex come and go, don't have any how. Nicest was a Viper HS, cheapest a Crossfire. Crossfire needed warranty service early on, I replaced with a Diamondback. Both were fine. I thought the Viper HS was a great scope @ around $600 until I tried a Sightron S3=very easy to see the quality difference for a little more $. Sightrons have never let me down, I've owned S1s, S3s an an S-Tac. Still have the 1/3 with lots of miles on both.
One of the few new scopes I've bought in recent years was a Burris, this model to be exact;
The glass might be the nicest I've used for the $, and I don't see ever replacing it. The power adjustment ring takes way too much effort to turn, but other than that oddity...it's a beauty.
For me, if it doesn't say Burris/Sightron/Leupold on it...I'm not overly interested unless it's an older, Japanese Bushnell like a 3200 or an old Banner.
You act like the other big scope companies don't have similar warranties... Burris, Bushnell, and Leupold all have lifetime warranties too.
I've got a vortex viper 3-9x40 w/ the 1" tube. For the price I paid ($299) I'm very happy with it, been hunting with it for about 7 years now, been dropped a few times climbing over logs, slipping on wet tree roots, etc, and haven't had any issues with it. I would absolutely buy another for the right price.
I don't have a lot of love for the diamondback or crossfire lines though.
If memory is correct, Don Burris was a key designer/engineer for the Redfield outfit when he formed the Burris Company. His early scopes resembled the Redfield look. If I were to choose between Vortex and Burris I'd go with Burris.
One of the best scopes Vortex had was the Diamondback Tactical in 3-9 but it is discontinued now, was $250. I guess they did not want competition to their Crossfire series.
Well the majority was Burris, so went with the illuminated Burris. Sighted the 7mm out to 500 with it, so far very happy! Thanks for all the imput and opinions, you guys are all great! Love this site!!!
