VSS Vintorez Project - or how to ruin a perfectly good VZ858

Here is my latest version.. :)

recently i made some upgrades too, made the shell deflector and a cheek riser (pictures soon to come), and some other modification that i will reveal in the near future.. :)

I was also thinking about squaring off the trigger guard and connect it to the magwell, but i'd like to keep the option of removing the AR-magwell and using factory mags in case i get bored using the 10rd ones.. :)

Close enough for me.. :)

Indeed, these Vin's were my inspiration Dimitri... I was an AR junkie for years before I caught the Red Fever :). For me Pimp'n together an AR was like Legos and while some plastic work on a SL8/G36K swap was a challenge it doesn't compare to scrounging together parts for an SVD and working with wood and steel for project like Vinny or my CZ-AK that's where the challenge/fun is:)... for me anyway. Something about wood and steel.

Very nice work.

Personally I prefer yours vs the original. You're forend is much more detailed as the VSS's looks like a hunk of forend from a HK chopped down. The knurling on your suppessor seems to come across better as well.

So what's next ?

Awesome stuff here!

Here was my crude experimentation:

Did a little bit of work on the front handguard over the weekend. It took a while to try to determine the best material to use. One that would take heat, was moldable and readily available. The best idea I could come up with was fibreglass. Never worked with it before so there was a steep learning curve involved but I think I should be almost there.

It'll be a top surrounding piece and a bottom plate that will snap on. Given the flexibility of the material it attaches solidly if its thin enough and appears very durable and resilient. I'll then either work the surface or cover with a thin dark brown leather for the finish. Some of the pics so far... and FYI - fibreglass is a PITA to work with:)

Looks good. I really like your work. Thinking about trying it myself.
With fiberglass if you want a smooth glass like finish you need to build a mold or use the handguards you just made to construct a mold that is smooth then wax it. Then gel coat it with a layer or two then add your fiberglass. That will produce a very smooth finish. Or you can sand the ones you made smooth. Watch out for the dust. Wear a mask!! Very itchy!!

Made some progress on Yo' Vinny last week (momma's been cutting me some honey-do list slack:)). Still a bit rough finishing wise but now its structurally complete. Now its just a just a matter of clean up the finishing, adding some detail work and then applying a Armour-coat in flat black on its way from CGN vendor Murdoc. There's light at the end of the tunnel now...

May be a mute point though if these come to fruition... h ttp://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2013/09/03/building-vss-vintorez-usa/

How is the project coming along ?

Arma-Coat from Murdoc came in uber-quick. Completed the ingraving but now I'm just waiting patiently on a hand knurling tool to come in so I can apply some knurling on the barrel shroud before applying the blackness  I'd say inside of a month and it should be done dependant on shipping. It runs just fine though :) Can't seem to get my hands on a Magpul PS2 stock extension that I can modify. Due to ITAR the US won't export and with no FNs or G3s in Canuckistan there's no reason to import them. PITA:mad:

A buddy sent me this link... said this is essentially what I'm doing to the CZ. Couldn't really argue... good chuckle... www.youtube.com/watch?v=50A9wjJ40Dk

Great work man, it will look great.. How much does it weigh now?

not sure... she won't keep a scale in the house :)... about the same weight as my bull barreled 11" AR15 I'd think?

Made a little progress. Sandblasted the parts that needed it and completed the Armacoat in flat black. I'm not happy with the colour of the forestock yet, and there's some finishing details that need attending, but progress is being made.

Its to the point where I can finally toss it in the jeep and take him and his comrades to the range...
