Those of you that have a Rem VTR in .223. I was wondering what kind of accuracy you are getting. I currently have a walking varminter in that caliber and getting good results but I love the fit of the VTR and was thinking of switching. Just wondering if it was worth it because of the great accuracy I am getting from the Savage.

My VTR .223 shoots very well capable of 5/8" 5 shot groups with factory 55 gr V-max (the Zombie loads), shoots about the same with my hand loaded 53 V-max using N-133

I would not recommend to switch from walking varminter to VTR. Yes, mine shoots 10-15mm 5-shot groups, but it took me changing the stock, the trigger, the firing pin and what not - a year of hard labor altogether. The brake does nothing usefull, it only strikes on the ears and complicates cleaning significantly. The effective barrel length is 20", so it's rather boring to find the right load. As for varminting, its 9"-twist seems exaggerated. The VTR is a rifle to look, not to shoot.

How does the brake complicate cleaning? The twist rate is good because it doesn't limit you to use light bullets. While shooting, why don't you wear ear protection? I'd recommend a VTR.

I've mentionned it: significantly. It is to be cleaned apart from cleaning the barrel.

You think shorter is the twist better it is for all kinds of bullets? i don't see it that way. Although you can shoot light bullets in 9" twist - and I myself shoot only 40- and 50-grain - it is better to shoot them from 12-14 twist.

Who told you I don't? Have you ever seen a shooting club where one can shoot without ear protection? But would you wear muffs while hunting yotes? I wouldn't.
I'd recommend a VTR.
Without any explanation. Have you at least owned one in 223?

I had one in .308. Cleaning is no harder than any other rifle. No idea why you would want to, or need to clean the brake.
Faster twist is always better. Why would you want to only be able to shoot 55 grain and under bullets? You can't over stabilize them in a 1/9 twist. Why is a slower twist better? It's not in my opinion, and I can use 69 and 77 grain Match Kings.
I always wear ear protection. Always. You're a fool if you don't. My electronic ear muffs keep my ears warm, and I can also hear better with them. You said it hurts your ears, so you ratted yourself out.

One day, you will understand !

Well, I put thousands of rounds through it with no issues whatsoever. It's only a few slits cut I to the top of the triangular barrel anyways, not even a real brake.

I give you this one, its easy to clean the VTR *kinda-brake* !

If its easy to clean, there is no reasons to not clean it ;)

I owned a vtr in 223 and I found it to be very accurate but only with heavier bullets I was hoping to be able to use up some of my apocolypse stash of 223 and the 55g didn't group worth a crap I was very dissapointed, but i went up to a 65 or 69 grain and even a 72 i think it was and watched my groups pull in very tight but I sold it due to the fact i was looking to use up my stash

My Vtr only has a smithed trigger. Not even bedded and shoots pretty much anything well at 100. It shoots the 45gr win white box right around an inch. 55gr nosler varmageddon shoots very well and the heavy nosler and hornady stuff. Beyond 100 it hated the 53gr v-max and the white box opened up alot. It likes 55 gr v-max though.as for the muzzle brake I like it because it protects the crown but it's hardly necessary. I might cut mine off so it fits in a short case I have.

Cheers, Patrick
