VX-II or VX-3 question

I'm looking at getting a new scope and was wondering if there really was that big of a difference between a VX-II and a VX-3 to justify the cost difference. I would be looking at the VX-II 6-18x40 AO or the VX-3 4.5-14x40 AO (maybe a 6.5-20) which would be going on a 17FB used for gophers, crows, paper and maybe some coyotes next winter. I presently have a VX-II and think it is a pretty good scope but have never looked through a VX-3.

After 2004 the VX11 were getting pretty close to the VX111s due to the MC4 coatings going into the cheaper line. The latest VX-3s pulled ahead again with the trickle down coatings and upgraded erector spring setup.
Whether its worth it or not will depend on what a couple hundred bucks is worth to you, whether coin slotted adjustments bug you, whether you want one of the "designer reticles" and what value you put on the last bit of optical quality. Since you are talking about longrange gophers you should care.
Now that the Mark 4 style erector assembly springs are in the 3s, I don't think there's any choice if spinning turrets is in your plans.
I'm juggling 24 Leupolds right now, only 2 are 11s. The rest are Vari X 111s, VX 111s, VX 3s and Mark 4s. I guess that's my vote for whether its worth it.:D

Personally, I'd go for the VX3. I've got some VariX11's and they're pretty good but I can see a diff in the X3's. A friend just looked through one last week and that's his choice for a new rifle. Just me but I'd go for the 4.5-14x40. In the field I find it difficult to controll anything over 12-14X and even out to 200yds it's easy to get sub MOA with just 6X.

I have a VX-II 6-18 AO target and I love it. I use it for silhouette on my CZ452. I'm constantly changing the elevations settings as you have to as you move between each distance.

Great scope. I do want a VX3 6.5-20EFR though, however, that's only because I'm putting together a high power silhouette rig as well, so, my VX-II will still see the same amount of use. It's a lifetime purchase that one.

Thanks for all the replys. I think Dogleg has too much money and needs to adopt me. :D We don't live that far apart, I can drive down and fill out the papers on short notice.

Ive got a vx2 6-18ao with target turrets that rides on my gopher rig and I love it, I wouldnt hesitate to buy another but i am juggling the same problem as you whether to step up to the vx3 6.5-20.hmmm decisions decisions

quick question, when you mentioned your II's, did you mean the newer vx or the older vari-x version?
