I'm thinking about buying one of these scopes and can't decide which is the better bang for the buck? To get the VX III would cost me about $150 bucks more. Is it worth it? What is gained by buying the LX III?

Quality is better, the old saying , get what you pay for.
Anyhoo, There are some fine scopes come up on ee, at 2 prices , and you get a 3.
Things to watch for, ask, ring marks, elevation/windage dials messed up, ie return to zero. Lenses are free from damage, and lens coating is still intact.

I have a VX II 3X9X40 on my 270 WSM and I really like it. It's clear and bright.

I think the main difference between the VX IIIs and VX IIs is that the VX IIIs have a one piece tube while the VX IIs do not. Also the VX IIIs have a slightly better coating on the lenses. You probably can't go wrong with either.
