Has anybody actually compared the new vx lines to each other , or to the ultralights? I'm looking for a comparison in light transmission, and image quality between the VX-II 3x-9x 40, 3x-9x 33, and the VX-III3.5-10 40. I'm looking to scope a 7lb. fast twist .22-250 walking rifle, so I want the best optics availible w/o too much bulk or weight, w/o getting too nuts over a few ozs. I know the VX-III has indexed glass, vs. the multicoat 4, but is it worth the extra $$$? I've got a VX-II 3x-9x 40 and an old vari-x III 3.5x-10, and the II beats it hands down. First hand accounts would be appreciated.

Sitting inside - you wouldn't notice much of a difference, real world conditions if you could see 2 rifles side by side - youd find differences, especially with wash light, say when the sun is rising/setting and opposite to where you are looking, the VXIII will clean up the spare light considerably more, of course with low light you will gain a little and with a smaller objective lens the margin of light going through is only marginally less - almost un-noticeable unless under certain conditions.

you'd be hard pressed to beat the VXII 3-9x40, for a walking varmint rig which 98% of the time wont be used in extreme low light situations

I have a 3-9x33 UL on its way for a lightweight 260 I have. I suspect it will be bright enough for me :D

I think I'll stay with the vari-x iii for a bit. I'll be very interested to hear how the ultralight works out. Any problem having a M1 knob put on the ultralight?

I asked the same question last week for a scope for my Rem LVSF .22-250. I ended up scooping a VXIII 3.5-10X40 on EE for a good price. I think it's a good compromise for weight, size and power for a light long range rifle.

mpwolf,
Side by side in good light the VX11 doesn't give up much to the VX111, but there is enough to matter to me. When light drops the difference is more pronounced. The ultra-lights I found to be disappointing compared to either.

This is what my gut tells me, but I figured I'd ask.

I run a VX-II on my '06 and have had no issues with it. I haven't tried the other two but comparing it to a varmint Bushnell or Tasco there is NO comparison between them (hence their expense).

Obviously we're not allowed to shoot after dark and I start heading in when the sun starts getting low so I'm not worried about it, in real world situations and marketing apart, you're not going to go wrong with a VX-II. If it wasn't for the fact that they're the same price as my plinking rifles themselves, I'd toss my cheaper scopes and buy a couple of VX-IIs for them. LR
