Good day,

I'm about to get a smoking deal( I mean take me away in hancuffs deal)
on a scope my question is all things being equal;magnification,50mill objective,
30mmtube side focus Mildot ret.whats the difference between the VXIII
tactical (Black ring) and the MarkIV? It will go on a .338/300 ultra
pusshing a 250gr bullet @approx 3000fps.Neither has been mounted but
have been handled a bit .Still like new.

regards.

absolutly not knockoffs.original leupolds with box and papers.one of those
guy owes another money is short cash guy takes scopes in trade.now selling
@ belowe wholesale prices just to get his money back deals. My buddies friend doesnt shoot and doesnt care if he could get more if he wait a little.
so I get first crack and my buddy will out the other one on his 300WSM.
Thanks for looking out for me though. There is know way I would put
a cheap POS$100 knock off on a $2500 custom rifle especially when I
already have a VariX III in 3.5-10 on it.
regards

I went trough a whole exercise with one of the gents on the site here after the purchased rifle came with a VariX III instead of the advertised Mark IV. Lots of contact with Leupold, but finally we found out that they sell/sold them with the same model number. Only after a new coating system did they mark them as Mark IV instead of VariX III. I still need to have a beer one night with that guy, lots to talk about! Cheers, Rene.

The Leupold Answer Guide

Why the cost difference between Mark 4 & Vari-X III LR M1/M3
Mark 4 scopes are designed for military applications, requiring ultimate performance under the worst envirionmental conditions. The scopes pass the most severe and extensive testing through extremes of shock, temperature, humidity, submersion and altitude. The Mark 4 30mm main tube has a wall thickness of 0.100", for maximum strength and durability, while also providing generous windage and elevation adjustment travel. The Mark 4 scopes are impact tested 10,000 impacts at a level of 1,200 Gs of force. The price reflects the military standards, specifications and extensive testing required by the military. The Vari-X III 3.5-10x40mm Long Range models are basicly Vari-X III scopes with 30mm maintube, side focus parallax, with M1 style or M3 style adjustment knobs. The standards and testing are the same as for the Vari-X III scope models.

What is the scope tube wall thickness of the Leupold scopes?
The scope maintube wall thickness is: Mark 4 scopes: .1 - 100 thousands VX-I, Vari-X II, VX-II & Vari-X-III scopes: .06 - .07 Vari-X-III Long Range 30mm scopes: .07 - .08

Are all scopes recoil/impact tested to the same standard?
The Mark 4 scopes are impact tested at 1,600 G's. The Handgun scopes are impact tested at 1,500 G's. The Standard Rifle scopes are impact tested at 750 G's.

This is true if you are talking about the "real" original MK4 s - 10XMI and M3, 16X M1"

Problem is a couple of years ago Leupold changed all their LR/Ts to the MK4 designation, which is why all their tac scopes now are called MK4

Main difference between the older LR/Tand new MK4 LR/T is the new ones have the index matched lenses ( vs Multicote 4 for the older style ). I have compared both side by side and I couldn't really tell much difference.

The "true MK4s are fixed power all 40mm obj . Also the true MK4s are way more expensive .

At a glance way to tell the difference

- original MK4s fixed power
- turret housings more rounded looking on the newer MK4 variables
- newer MK4s have blacked out gold ring ( true MK4s have nor "ring" )
- objective bell larger on original MK4s

$1300 USD for the 10X M1 MK4 LR/T

$880 USD for the 3.5-10 M1 LR/T

Here is an excellent comparision ( with pics ) between the new MK4 variables and the true M4s ( go about half way down
