Vz-24 barrel pitted

Hello all, I just bought a vz-24 that was listed as very good.everything is extremely good except
The barrel has pitting in it. The rifling is good very sharp but the lands are pitted. I shot off 5 rounds
Offhand and hit the target twice so I really don't know how well it shoots yet. I know this rifle is 70+
Years old. My question is, is this rifle in very good condition? Is it common to have some pitting in the barrel?

If it is one of the RC VZ's, virtually all of them have SOME degree of bore pitting. Most will still shoot, and you are correct to assume that off-hand shooting tells you zip about the rifle's performance.
 
Cosmetically they are very good unfortunatly the Russians( assuming you have a Russian capture) didn't rebarrel the rifles so they can be rough on the inside. Mine has dark groves and has definatly seen service no pitting though but it seems to shoot quite well 3-5 inch groups at 100m it was getting dark so it could of been better but don't be disappointed till you test it out for real, even if it can't shoot to well that just means it was actually saw use on the eastern front, maybe even in Stalingrad witch is pretty cool in itself.

First Mauser I'm glad that the slightly pitted bore is not out of the norm. I will load up some more
Rounds and see how it really shoots.
 
Remember the lowest sight setting is 300m so aim like 4-6 inches low at 100 and don't forget to have fun.
Is your rear sight v notch quite small? Mine is a bit small but I guess that's not a bad thing

If you want to really ring out the full potential of this rifle, load it with 170 grain flat base bullets and up to higher pressures than found in most manuals. Some of the later manuals actually give you max loads that are around 50,000cup and are quite good. Very close to the issued European rounds. My favorite and most accurate load, in rifles with decent bores is 53.0 grains of W748 and chronies at an average 2675 fps. All of my rifles like this with the bullets seated out as far as practical.
 
If you want to try and clean up the bore, I recommend using JB Bore paste. I have used this on some "sewer pipe" bores before, and have been pleasantly surprised by the end results.
