Hello All. Well here is my range report on my newly aquired G-24(t) Mauser. For this test firing I was using 198g Igman soft point ammunition. Temperature was -1 degree C. Wind was from the North East. My target was North of my position.

First thing to note, if you recall my other thread titled (K98 Shoots High.) well seems my G-24 shoots high also. Windage was also off by about two inches to the left. This I will adjust later. The elevation not so easy. The POI was approx 6 to 10 inches high from my aim point. But the grouping from this mauser was better than my RC K98. One factor to consider here is the fact that the bore looks brand new unfired condition. Although not a great grouping you have to consider that the open sights on any Mauser are pretty unfriendly to use.

I am sure if fitted with either a peep sight or a scope, this rifle would achieve very tight groupings.

The straight bolt on the G-24 was surprisingly easy to use. The action was very smooth and trigger pull was not too strong.

This rifle is definitely a keeper for me, the walnut stock is very nice and the mismatched handguard is not to noticable.:D :D

That group isn't unreasonable, I figure a milsurp that shoots 3" or less is pretty good, especially with irons, plus Igman ammo isn't very good either.

I bet with some good handloads and some practice with those sights you could squeeze it down to 2".

I will be reloading my 8mm, soon I am still getting my operation set up. Once it's ready, lookout for my questions on how to .....:)

The "windage of this group is great-but three rounds is just not enough to realy tell much. Getting a consistant elevation sight picture is tough with these sights. If,after, say ten rounds you get vertical stringing then you might take a hard look at your bedding.

This just might be an exceptionally good shooter .Play with it some more and let us know.

Hello Yodad. I'm not up to speed on bedding, could you elaborate further. Give me the fix... ie if I shoot 10 shots and get this vertical stringing,, what does that mean with regard to bedding..

The windage was off by about 2 to 3 inches to the left. I got those shots close to center by adjusting my Aim Point. I picked the lower right deer head for those three shots. So on this target the POI was high about 6 to 10 inches, and windage was left 2 to 3. At first I aimed at dead center, and POI was just high left of top of target. So I just changed my aim to get on center.

Bedding? This refers to the fit of the metal to the wood. On almost all military bolt action rifles the barrel itself should only contact the stock at the fore tip. Sometimes this is in the wood or sometimes the cap.

One thing seems constant is that the rest of the barrel should have clearance from the wood. Wood wiggles around. It warps left and right-and up and down.

If the wood bears against the barrel (or touches in the wrong spot) then as things heat from firing ,the barrel can be literally bent(or change the frequency of vibration)-thus changing the point of impact.

This is a VERY simple explanation and many around here could do much better. But I believe the barrel should contact at the muzzle and just before the action ring-the rest should have significant clearance. This includes the hand guards

I wouldn't play with it now- do some more shooting. When you confident you are getting a consistant sight picture and trigger let off then start to analyse the group.

Hope I havn't confused!!

Not to much, but the bedding issue sounds like a ##### to figure.. Well I will shoot more like you said first, but if I have to check that, I will go to a smith..

Thanks.
