VZ-24 What do I have??

Looking over one of my Mausers and just realized something peculiar.

The sights have Farsi gradations on them. Would this be an Iranian/Persian Mauser?

It has a straight bolt.

2 sets of sling swivels, one on the bottom of the stock and the other on the side.

A stock disk in the butt

Side of the receiver is marked "vz. 24." with the numbers being taller than the letters

top of receiver is stamped:

CESKOSLOVENSKA
ZBROJOVKA
=BRNO=

Between the top of the receiver and side , an "E29" with what looks like a lion between the letter and numbers is crossed out and a serial number is stamped just below that.

What do i have?
 
You have a 1929 dated VZ24, made in Czechoslovakia. The design of the VZ24 suggests the Czechs borrowed design implements from the German Kar 98, German Gewehr 98, and Austrian M95. They are very well made, possibly on the same German equipment and tools used during and before WW1.

She sounds like a VZ24 that was sold into surplus and ended up possibly in the Middle East but it is hard to say.

I have your sister rifle from 1929 but she stayed with the Czechs for her service life. Her serial number is 1322 P2, how close is yours ? Would you have an pictures ?

At any rate, you won't be disappointed with your VZ24 :).
 
Apparently the Persian's did order some standard VZ 24's, and the sights were marked in Farsi, but from what I can see it looks like they had the standard Persian crest on them though. Also it seems this order was placed well after 1929.

Nabs is probably right that it was sold as surplus somewhere along the line and fitted with the Farsi rear sight.

I'd like to see some pics of it. Sounds like an interesting VZ 24.

I didn't interpret that as sarcasm. I think you have something somewhat uncommon. This doesn't mean that you can sell it for a bazillion dollars, but it's also not something you're going to find a ton of at the local gunshow.

I think he is referring to the Czech Brno stamping on the receiver ring. Most seem to be scrubbed while a few have the Czech lion stamp. Would that rifle be a 98/22 model? Some of the guys on here will know. It was obviously a contract gun for Persia or Turkey or somewhere else in the region. Nice rifle!
 
The Czech model 1898/22 has the same receiver stamp as the OPs and is a clone of the German Gewehr 98 with a few visual differences most notably the hand guard and tangent rear sight. I think they have "98" stamped on the side rail but I can't remember.

L.I., you have a very nice VZ24, similar to the one that I am taking care of and it is nice to see another from the same production year.

When I passed through Iran in late 1968 the border guards were armed with the long 98/29 Persian Mausers and Uzi submachine guns.
