VZ-52/57 take-down (work in progress)

I took mine out this weekend for the first time. Love it! Great gun. I'm really surprised at how little muzzle rise their is... that piston around the barrel really works great- no rise/ torque. Call me crazy, but when I was cleaning it I felt I should be removing the nuts that hold the piston assembly together. Seemed to have a lot of carbon build-up.

mags

Off topic: but how hard are mags to get for that rifle? hmmm they look very close to AK mags.....I wonder how much grinding you would have to do on that sucker:D

Question is how hard are clips to get. The mag is meant to be left in place and charged with clips.

Although I have enough mags, I cant find clips....

Ditto. My understanding was that only two mags were issued, per man. There must be a fellow hiding a stash of stripper clips, raise your hand sir! (by the way, before anyone says it, normal 7.62x39 clips don't work, the vz 52/57 ones are narrower, kinda like mauser clips)

stripper clips

What? you need a special type stripper clip for tht rifle? The ones that come on the surplus stuff were getting wont load in that gun?

There's a scraper made just for that in the tool kit.
Do NOT disassemble the piston assembly tuning nuts. Their position determines the gas volume admitted and the force of the ejection; a few turns can give you no ejection or double-feeds.
Clean with brake cleaner and brass brushes to avoid scratching the machined surfaces. Scrape under the piston skirt and flush the works with brake cleaner or Rem-Oil.
Put a dab of heavy lithium or graphite grease on the barrel and spread it thin BEFORE remounting parts.
PP. :)

Bizarre that they would make a rifle that has the most sensitive part not cleanable ... Especially when using corrisve ammo.

Is it all stainless or something ?

Anybody got one of the original manuals whom could verify ?

I've seen instructions that indicate otherwise, but the fact that you need a 22mm and a 23mm wrench to disassemble it makes me think there is no need. Everything required to clean should be in the kit with the rifle.

The large wrenches are needed for gas adjustment, which is done at the armorers level.....

Oh! That should make it one VERRRRY EARLY model! ;)
Enjoy it; it is a very interesting and well made rifle.

There was so much gunk I actually had to "throw out" one of my famous micro fiber cloths I sell because the cloth went from grey to BLACK. At that point you'll cause more damage to the washer than just getting another one. I used about 50 Q-Tips too.

Its a neat old rifle. It was my first center fire weapon. I was browsing down at Lever Arms and came upon a rack of them for if I recall correctly was $150 each. That was about 1984 or so. I thought it was an interesting piece and you couldn't buy a decent .22 for the price. A spare magazine for 10 bucks and a couple boxes of ammo and I was good to go. Except for cleaning off one hell of a lot of cosmoline or whatever they packed it in.

Brings back memories.
