I'm familiar with the sks and i have an opportunity to purchases a vz 52/57. I know the vz is a lot more rare and collectable, but how does it compare to the sks in quality and function, and what should I expect to have to pay for one in good shape?

$600-800 for one in great shape.

They are heavy and a bit cumbersome. Parts might be an issue if it's a shooter.

vz. 58 is a better rifle.

They are light years ahead of the SKS in both build quality and design. Parts aren't that big of a problem. Numrich and other have parts in stock.

For that price I'd definitely go for it! I bought mine at a gun show a couple years ago hardly knowing anything about them, which I don't normally do, but I haven't once regretted it! Very well made and more accurate than my SKS'. I feed mine non-corrosive ammo because cleaning the gas system takes a bit more work, fortunately canadaammo has tons of non-corrosive 7.62x39 for barely more money than (or sometimes the same price as) corrosive surplus...

Check to see that it has the proper magazine too as it's not uncommon to see a vz52 magazine in a vz52/57 and vice versa. They are somewhat interchangeable but some feeding issues have been reported with the incorrect magazine.

I have 1x of each and they are neat - but bulky and heavy. I picked them up as part of my more advanced Czech collection. Even with the 7.62x39 chambering it would not be a field rifle for me - more just collector pieces and footnotes in history. If you want a shooter - pick up a vz58 or variant - many are quite accurate and great in the field or range.
