VZ-58/CZ-858 optics mount - foiled again!

You don't absolutely need to clear the rear sight. I know a guy in the US with a LER on an Ulitmak AK rail and he has it mounted low and ahead of the rear sight.

The sight blocks part of the bottom of the glass, but it's perfectly usable.

You drilled and tapped the rail for screws & drilled the receiver with plain holes, then used screws from inside the receiver?

That's exactly how I did it.

Seeing the rail up close, it looks something like the Zenit universal rail available from one of the distributors of scopes made in Belarus (not a site sponsor so will leave the name out) and from some Canadian distributors?

It's an SVD rail and mount. The rail has been modified so that the mount will clear the side of the receiver by welding a block of steel underneath. The thickness of the rail determines the position of the scope over the bore.

I'm curious as to how you decided the correct place to put the rail, and to drill the matching holes in the receiver. Did you use the scope mount bracket and find the best spot for a good sight line by experiment?

I took measurements of the receiver internals to determine where to drill. I could see that it would work and what I needed to do when I had the mount and rail in hand.

My biggest concern with trying to do this at home has always been how to find the correct location for the rail and the mounting holes without interfering with the action, and without making extra "oops" holes in the side of the receiver.

I used button head screws to secure the rail so that the screws would have enough clearance to ensure normal operation. To be certain I was getting everything in the right place I drilled the receiver with the internals installed. Doing another one would not be risky as I have the example to duplicate and the internals could be removed making it less of a pita to put together.

Thanks for the nice pics,

You are very welcome:D

Not a scout mount but these mounts work well with red dots.

Where did you buy that mount!? Is it 1913 rail?

That base that replaces the rear sight looks good, but it is short. It would hold a red dot, but I was thinking of LER pistol scope. Is it too short for that?

It is the only real option for optic mounting. The ones that replace the top handguard will wonder on you as the gun heats up.
The ones that ride on the side of the receiver are way to high to offer any realistic cheekweld. (imho)
