I thought I had read something about people having problems with their VZ58s in 223 but I can't find the info. And I'm really looking to buy a vz58 so I'd like to know:

Does anyone of you guys have problems their VZ58 in .223 ?

And why choose 223 or 7.62x39 over the other?

And finally whatever the caliber are you happy with your VZ58 ? Any comments to influence my decision?

Thank you guys

I've read about issues with the .223 versions, but I haven't had a single problem with my 7.5" VZ 58. It's been a very reliable firearm, although I admit I've only put about 400 rounds down the barrel. That being said, in my experience, most firearm issues are related to break in and show themselves during the first 500 rounds or so. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones, or maybe we're only hearing from those who have had problems.

Remember- a Google search will indicate there are major problems with just about EVERY gun maker, and every gun ever made. Does this mean you should avoid every single gun and manufacturer out there????????

Had I problem with mine. It was replaced under warranty. Had it out today and worked fine. I believe the issue has been identified and is being repaired under warranty. I like the 223 because the surplus ammo isn't steel core and I can shoot it at the indoor range. I can't shoot my 7.62 X 39 rifles there because of steel core surplus ammo.

I've gone through 4 Vz58s, two in 7.62x39 and two in .223

I kept the .223's and have never had an issue except when shooting Norinco junk-ammo.

I like the .223 guns because I don't have to clean them the way I would with corrosive.

the csa vz58 in .223 seem to have more breakage than the 7.62 one, i cant speak about the csa one but i have the cz858 has probably 3k round in and the only think i switched was the striker because is was beginning to crack but without that and sometime the gremlin when other people try it i think they hold the trigger ^^ it not a f-a, that why the gremlin show it ass but never when i shoot , but i tabbed the bold carrier

i was always tempted too to by one in .223 but i will stick with the 7.62

or just cleaning ... buyed a crates of sellier and bellot surplus this afternoon a wss south in edmonton for 1200 round 200buck that .18 cent a round you can shoot twice the price of the non corrosive or .223

Mine works perfect but I have one of the early ones when CSA was still run by Czechs. No they are US owned probably they started to notice the bottom line

Mine is the 18.5" .223 Sporter model. Good gun so far with 550 rounds down the barrel. Its only slightly more accurate than a 7.62x39 but I got sick of cleaning my CZUB Vz 58 in 7.62x39. You can buy non-corrosive 7.62x39 but the #### is still dirty. Takes 30 patches just to get the damn thing clean. With American Eagle .223, takes 3 - 4 patches tops. Then again, I only shoot about 40 - 60 rounds in one sitting not 1000 like some people do. As a hunting rifle, sure, I guess you could use it as one. In BC, its legal to hunt deer with a .223. In fact, its legal to hunt moose with a .223 so legally it is on the same level as the 7.62x39 Vz 58 for hunting in BC but you would be much better off picking up Savage Axis or even a sporterized Lee Enfield .303.

If you look for one ,used or new, and you want to know what year it was made, there will be a symbol on the side of the gun. Will look like an X but its actually a Czech Lion Crest. There will be a number after that, 09, 10, 12, exc. That number means what year yours was made.

FFS, How many times do I have to say this? They're not US owned. Who ever started saying this needs to be shot. Czech Small Arms is a Czech company in Jablanka, Czech Republic. CzechPoint is just the US Importer. They do not own CSA!!!

i've been on the same prowl as you have been for the last two months while i make up my mind 7.62 or .223

From all i've read .223 is an iffy Buy.
read lots about people have failures from round one up to having a clean record after 1000 rounds then having it on the 1001 round.

7.62 seems to be the smarter choice.
If cleaning isn't your thing, there are non-corrosive choices which give or take is about the same price as .223 bulk ammo.
most Canadian tires i've been in sells non-corrosive 7.62. Where its definitely Alot harder to source and buy non-corrosive 7.62 vs .223 ammo, it exists enough to maybe have to wait a month before you buy your next crate.

I've decided to buy the gun in the cambering it was designed for. I'm in the midst of buying one now if all works out. :)
there is no advantage between .223 or 7.62 in these rifles other than the sourcing of non-corrosive ammo to save cleaning time.
Buying in bulk pretty much negates the benefits of reloading ammo, so brass vs steel cases shouldn't be an issue either.

Great info thanks guys. Would love more input on this if anyone else as something to say!

I've been making range reports on the .223 Vz 58 and I continue to do updates on it after I hit a new mile stone in the round count. Just trying to keep a good bit of into on the gun as I do believe the .223 Vz 58 has a lot of miss information out there. I remember when the CZUB Vz 58 rifles came in and everyone was #####ing about reliability issues with them on the 2 types of gremlin issues they're known to have for awhile.

Anyways, I'll post a link to my last range report update which was update #3. There is a link to the 2nd update in the 3rd and a link to the first report in the 2nd.
