VZ.58 Issues

So I got my CSA VZ.58 a few weeks ago, and FINALLY got to fire it today. Awesome. Except....

My gun seems to have reliability issues. Occasionally the bolt would not travel all the way forward after firing a shot, and would stop at the base of the magazine/rounds. I would pull the bolt back and release it and it'd pick up the rounds. I'm shooting Dominion 7.62 HP from Canadaammo. Works great in my SKS, I frequently recommend it. However I only shot 80 rounds today. And within the course of 20 of them, the gun jammed twice. Not cool.

Causes? My (potentially terrible lol) theories:

Well, I only lightly oiled the rails the bolt travels along. But I haven't heard of issues stemming from under oiling the VZ's from other people, and they weren't dry by any means. The guy who was talking to me about it before I bought it (bought it from a different guy) told me it was good to fire right outta the box.

Somehow the magazine is messing with the gun. I was only using and reloading one magazine for a stretch and that's the one all the jams occurred with. Maybe something I couldn't see was preventing the bolt from traveling forwards?

The only disassembly I did of the gun was in the field. I popped off the rear housing thing the bolt retracts into, saw all the springs and realized it would be very stupid to lubricate/reassemble that portion for the first time in a field. Garages or workbenches are the place for that, baby. So I lubed the side tracks the bolt slides on, put the rear housing back on, and put the pin back through. No big deal. Also, I did do a dry fire before trying to disassemble. Not sure what'd happen if I tried without disengaging the striker or whatever.

Could be my fault. I doubt it somehow. Then again, I don't hear about CSA putting out too many lemons. I'm taking the gun to the store I bought it from, Calgary Shooting Center, and I'll keep you guys posted, if anyone cares. I always get good customer service at CSC and have so far only bought guns from them in my short adoption of the hobby. If it is my fault somehow, then I''ll expect the fix isn't cheap but I'll at least have learned a lesson. I'm going to feel pretty dumb if I put this back together improperly (I only touched like 4 parts!!!) :p but I'll put on my big boy pants and admit there's a possibility it's my fault. In fact, however slim it may be that it's my fault, I doubt that CSA is at fault significantly less.

I dunno, this is my first semi-expensive gun and I'm a bit freaked out at the results. Love EVERYTHING else about the gun and I know issues in a CSA are pretty flippin rare because the gremlin is fixed from the factory, and they do a good job overall.

So you used one mag, that seems to be the problem if it was stopping at the mag. Your spring on your mag could be so tight it's not allowing another round to come up or there is some part of your mag that is causing your bolt carrier to stop. You said the problem went away once you used another mag so it sounds like a mag problem. The problematic mag was there any noticeable damage where it looked like something was jamming up?

Mag problems are the most common culprit... Sounds like that's your trouble.

Fortunately, you can pitch that crap mag, and buy more. Try a few other mags before thinking you have an issue.

I didn't see any damage, but I could easily be wrong. Anticipating a ban I bought 5 spare, I'll have to do a visual comparison. I dunno, it seemed like a gun problem somehow. My first guess was magazines as well but the bolt didn't seem as smooth as it should've been. Like I oiled it, it felt smooth, then it felt clunky again like 40 rounds later. Like something just kinda felt off. Could easily be magazine or hypochondria related though

Also, bflies, I think it's a 2015 because it came with an ATI stock and I haven't seen that any other year. In fact, I think that's within the last few months.

Well I brought it in and we test fired some prvi partisan SP ammo. The gun shave off some of the noses lol, but with the range mag it fed 100%. With my magazine, it did not. So we're assuming that it's a magazine thing for now, and I'm going to mark the magazine and test the others. Within the next few weeks I hope to put a few hundred rounds through this gun in other mags for me to get confident in its reliability. If it's just the mag, then it's no big deal. If it jams up with another magazine, then I'll be ticked and get an exchange or see what can be done.

Worth noting is I have a FDE VZ, and the 2 mags it comes with are also painted FDE, one of which is the one causing the issues. Maybe it's the paint. I don't know. There were no visual deformities to the mag though.

This is all really bizarre. The guys at CSC were really helpful though and if there are continued problems (fingers crossed), I'm sure they'll help me out.

It seems common to get one good mag and one bad mag in the box these days. It happened to me and I've heard about others too. Both my mags worked good but I had one that rattled as it sounded like the spring was detached on the inside below the rivet. I've only had feeding issues on the CSA after over greesing the bolt carrier rails. Otherwise it was always just as reliable as my sks if not more so. And yeah you gotta dry fire it before you field strip it.
