Im looking at spending around a grand (just for the rifle) so it pretty much narrows me down to the VZ and the T97 because I want non res. What one would you choose?

Anything else on the market that is NR and doesn't cost over 1500 ? (semi auto black rifles)

Given ammo availability, I pick the T-97, then the SUB-2k with glock mag.

I don't have a problem running corrosive ammo in a $200 gun, but not in a $1100 gun.

I chose the VZ58, but decided I would go with the 5.56/.223, despite the apparent issues with a few of them over the last year or so. Seeing as the warranty service has been excellent from the reports out there I figured it would be less of a gamble. Should see mine middle of next week. :) Waiting sucks!!!

I really like my T97. Trigger is better on the 58 by far but scope mounting and mag availability make the T97 a winner for me. Also take into consideration that much of 7.62x39 is imported where as at least .223 is domestically produced. Long term that could matter.

In X39 VZ hands down. I would steer clear of the 223.. I got a 223 cheap but traded it still unfired for a X39. But what I want to know is why the Mini14 isnt on the list? My black/red rifles include VZ(X39), Mini14, T97 and AR. I would pick a favorite in that order.

Mainly because I had never really considerd it and I like MILSURP ammo, cheap and reliable. lol. If I could find a mini in 556 then maybe

Going to check out a lead I got on a vz in a local shop.

IMO it comes down to ammo. Ive owned both and shot both extensively. The VZ58 would be my first choice for a 7.62 cambered gun NO QUESTION. I absolutely LOVE it. But if you want to shoot .223 the VZs in that calibre have spotty reputations.
I ended up selling my VZ only because I didnt want to have to stock another calibre and I can buy cheap .223 thats NON corrosive. Since I have an AR I shoot alot at the range, it made sense to just stick with .223 for everything.

If I didnt have a calibre I was stocking already and I had to choose between the 2, it would be a TOUGH decision.

The VZ is excellent ergonomically IMO. But lacks decent optics mounts. Its simple and breaks down super easy for cleaning. Its not heavy at all. However, it takes its own mags that are ALL limited to 5 rounds and the nice, black ones aren't easy to find.

The T97 feels great to shoulder IMO. This is personal preference but holding it is great. The safety is a joke... that is true. But the mag release can be learned... it just takes practice. It DOES take standard AR mags so you can run 10 round pistol mags in it which means you'll be changes mags half as much... so the slightly longer mag change time becomes a non issue. It also lacks any, decent optics mounting options other than the FTU from t97.ca... but that is an AWESOME upgrade that changes the whole gun IMO and makes it so much better.

It really comes down to what calibre you want to shoot and weather or not you care about shooting alot of corrosive ammo. Any cheap 7.62 is going to be corrosive. (the cheapest stuff anyway)... whereas the cheapest .223 is not corrosive. If you have aspirations of hunting larger game, maybe the VZ is the better choice. If its just punching paper, maybe the T97

You really should hold both though to see which one fits best.

Is it the terrible trigger, lousy mag release, or the horrible selector that makes it more fun?

I'll admit, it's a hard gun to figure out. If you have a low iq, or don't know how to control your left hand it will be a challenge to work the controls on a t97.
For this of us who don't break into tears upon having to use our left hand, it's a hell of a fun gun to shoot. Mine is a blast.

But the vz is one of the best rifles I've ever shot. I don't think the op would be upset with either choice.

We just hit a new low

keep em coming.

As I own a csa vz58 in .223 and my father owns a t97, I can say I have experience with both. Currently there are few add-ons for the t97... Now you can buy a ftu but that's about it for now. The vz58 has a wide variety of add-ons, stocks, grips, sights, hand guards, etc... Even a magwell adapter for converting over to the ar style mags. If you look on zahals site you'll see what I'm talking about.

As for range time they are both fun to and easy to use for throwing lead at paper targets, I did have a few small issues with the vz58 at first but sent it in for work with only took 2 weeks from the moment I sent it to the moment it was back in my hands and all covered by the warranty.
