Hey can anyone help me in deciding?

Im looking at buyin either the vz-58s from Marstar or the cz 858 from Wolverine supplies. I am under the impression that the only difference between the two is barrel length and restriction class. Are there any pros and cons of either or? Other than the fact I can take one up to my cottage with me and the vz-58 I can't.

If you were to get one..which one would it be??

Also..russian SKS or chinese? I'm leaning toward russian because I read that they are better quality and are more accurate. Again..which one would you get??

Any feedback would be great!

The vz looks cooler and has a chromed lined barrel. So gun for gun I think I would choose a vz over an 858. However. With our transportation laws the VZ is restricted meaning that you require. A copy of your ATT, copy of your registration, the gun needs to be trigger locked in a locked case locked in the trunk of your car. You may only travel to and from the gun range by the most expedious route.

The 858 with an extra 4 inches of barrel must be transported unloaded.

Between a norinco and a russian. I would pick the russian. I have had several chinese sks and loved them all, but now is an opportunity to buy a russian for about the same a chinese one. Probably a once in a lifetime event.

I would go with the Cz8585 , I have one and there is nothing wrong with it , the only difference between that and the vz is the barrel , if having a shorter barrel is worth not being able to take it anywhere with you other than a range the well you know haha!
As for sks , I really don't think it matters , I have a Norinco and it shoots good to me , I have a russian one on the way ,but sks's no matter what make were never really known to be a super accurate rifle.
I would order a russian one though just cause they are harder to find, I think frontier still has some!
Good luck I hope this helps you out!
Take care

I bought an 858. Personally I like the longer profile, and especially the fact I can take it to the woods. It's very light and handy so having that option is really nice. The chrome bore and corrosion business is IMHO ludicrously over-stated. So don't let it be a deciding factor unless you cannot muster the energy to clean your rifle the same day as you shoot with it.

As for this SKS business, if you buy the 858 you'll already have a non-restricted in 7.62 soviet, making the purchase of an SKS unnecessary.

i respectfully disagree .... russian normally sells for 2X of norinco SKS but this summer you can get one for less than half the norinco .... you are not likely to get another chance at this price again so yes, you can use it and sell it for more in a few years.

I personally like the CZ858 because it's unrestricted so you could take it into the bush and it shoots pretty good. However it doesn't have a chromelined barrel like others have said so more maintenance. I understand from reading another post that there is a V58L which is a 20" barrel version unresricted.

However I haven't found a dealer that has one advertised, wolverive apparently carried them as some point. I'd like to pick-up a V58L myself. Any tips to finding one?

Cz

Get both !
The 858 advantages are that it is a useful very accurate work gun.
The disadvantages are that the barrel wears out fast if you fast fire hot.
The 58 advantages are that it can be rapid fired hot due to the chrome lining.
The disadvantages are that it wont shoot half inch groups at a hundred, and you cant hunt with it.
And yes you can get a look cool factor with the long barrel :)

I didn't get the idea from his original post that he was looking for an investment piece.

I have an 858 and I just bought it for the heck of it. I had no idea that it would be a very accurate rifle and a lot of fun to shoot. A friend of mine was shooting my gun at a gong 350 yards away and hitting it free hand, thing is the gong is only 6 inches wide by 18 inches hugh, pretty impressive I thought. FS

Welcome to CGN Roy! :)

I've got the VZ58 and love it! I only ever go to the range anyways so it doesn't really matter. The shorter barrel looks better and is the exact same as the gun you will see on the news once in awhile from the Czech Republic and other countries.

I use mine in competition and the shorter barrel length adds to the handling. Chrome lining doesn't hurt either! :D

I think the decision comes down to where you want to shoot it. If you really will be only shooting it at the range then get the VZ58.

With our transportation laws the VZ is restricted... You may only travel to and from the gun range by the most expedious route.
"Most expeditious route" where did you read that? It is "reasonably direct route". Quite different.

all this talk about Russian SKSs, where can I find one and how much should I expect to pay???

thanks!

Frontier... Just look up above at the site sponsors and click on the linky... Not too sure how many of them Frontier/Marlin has left, great to deal with, I ordered one from Frontier & SIR...

But..., your taking your chances with sirmailorder.ca because they are backordered and have a "waiting list", so you may not get one from SIR.

Cheers
Jay

Not having an rpal I don't really have a choice, so it'd be 858 for me, but most of my shooting I do off range, so I'd probably go with the 858 anyway....Marstar used to sell a non restricted with a chrome bore, what happened to those.

I would go with the 858 because I prefer a longer barrel and don't have an RPAL but I just got a couple VZ bayos in the mail today and they are very impressive little bayonets and you can really tell a lot of thought went into them. It has made me want the rifle they fit on.

Pierre05 welcome to CGN. Gotta say your CZ is georgeous! You've done a fantastic job on that. I would appreciate a little detail as to what stock and accessories you had put on it.

I hate to say it, but someone has to warn you. Your great taste in guns doesn't cover your taste in walpaper and furniture! :D Seriously though. Great gun.
