VZ-58 Perfect Simplicity and lightness?

WOW, y'all making me real happy I pulled the trigger to get mine, like I said, luvin' mine. One question, are these considered as rugged as the AK, you know, in the dirt etc. and still work flawlessly?

I sure can notice the difference in weight between the CZ 858 and the CSA VZ58.

Which one is heavier?

The simplicity and reliability, the Gremlin notwithstanding (and my rifle doesn't have it and never did), plus its light weight, make it one hell of a fun rifle, especially since I can take it anywhere with its 19" barrel. Some of the looks I get when shooting on Crown land in the Alberta mountains (I usually take my Norc M305 as well :D) are priceless!!

The only drawback I found while owning a VZ58 was that the corrosive ammo was a hassle to clean and it was more expensive to reload custom ammo than to buy the cheap corrosive cr@p. Otherwise, it was a fun gun.

What gremlin? Wen it happen just disasemble and retention the sear spring(pull it upwards)

I'd take a *good* AK like an Arsenal or one of the upcoming civilian models from Izhmash over a Vz58, however most civilan market AKs are mediocre at best.

I'm perfectly happy with a Vz58 however, and don't see the point of making them look like an AK.

According to broncoo, he can make any non-tabbed VZ exhibit the gremlin. If you aren't getting it, it's because of the way you pull your trigger.

They are really rugged, and will fire when gummed up. I believe there was a video on youtube of someone actually jamming a ham sandwich into one and still firing it.

Some of the 858's do have issues. Just like anything else. Mine is out of commission with a broken bolt right now. But that failure is a rarity.

After tinkering with mine, I would have to agree with Broncoo. I can replicate the gremlin 100% of the time if I am trying. The way I would avoid it would be just to be a little more "purposeful" while pulling the trigger.

I love my 858 the handling is super. Stripping it down is easier than an sks. The lack of a gas tube really eases with cleaning the rifle. 5 rounds is a pain with detachable mags and this is where my sks becomes a better target gun. It defeintly is a light rifle

The AK is a much bigger market, is available in FAR more configurations, has benefitted from a lot more in the way of development, and is more durable.

From a less practical standpoint, its also an icon in the way that the Vz58 will never be.

That said, I appreciate the Vz58's qualities plenty.

If AK's were available to be owned here, I would undoubtedly own an Arsenal in 7.62. I have owned a Chinese RPK years ago and it was a fantastic gun, but I think the CZ858 is still a better choice. I personally believe it to be a better design.

I think the Vz58 has it all over the AK as far as lightness and handling, especially compared to the early model AKs with their lunky milled receivers that took steel mags that weighed 1 lb each empty. The then-Czechslovaks must have been laughing at the comparison.

I think the sks is under valued more. Try manufacturing the sks today and see what it costs, sure wouldn't be 200 bucks.
The vz seems to be a simpler, lighter design then the sks. Trigger group is simple, not sure if it's better than the hammer fired sks though.

I originally got a cz 858 because I couldn't have an ak47. Closest thing to it. But after having my cz 858 I don't know if I'd ever really want an ak47 even if we could get them. It's an awesome rifle and an ak47 seems like it might even be a step down. Only reason I'd buy an ak47 is if it were cheaper than an 858 by at least $200-$300. I really enjoy shooting my 858.

That has been my experience also, which is why I don't own one anymore. I have been able to reproduce it with every 858 I have tried.

I've put close to 700 rounds through my 858 and haven't had the gremlin, nor has anyone else I've let shoot that rifle.

How are you pulling the trigger to get this to happen?
