I've noticed on youtube videos of Vz 58 type guns that on US versions (i.e. CZ-USA guns) that when the gun is on "fire", their safety is pushed forward, whereas on our CZ 858s the safety is pushed backwards.

Is there any reason for this, possibly due to importation or classification laws in either of the two countries? Or is it just arbitrary?

Most awkward safety in my safe, I gota use my right index to set my 858 to "fire"...

I'm also interested to know why that is.

I'm guessing since the cz858 is based off the original design and uses old milsurp parts, that backward moving safety follows other safeties ideology of the time.

Like other commie guns, the safety can be disengaged in a backwards motion while at the same time applying pressure to the trigger to fire. The SKS is also like this. As you disengage the sks safety your trigger finger lands on the trigger ready to fire. Not a bad option in a combat role.

That doesn't explain why some are backwards, and some forwards. ;)

All older CZ rifles pull back to fire. This includes my CZ452 Varmint and CZ527 Carbine. BRNOs are also backwards. It's kinda like cocking a Winchester.
The newly designed rifles such as the CZ455 have a forward to fire safety mechanism.

As these rifles are bolt action I never use the safety anyway. I'm sure it's a pain on a semi auto rifle.

Back is Semi, middle is Safe, forward is Full auto.
CZ retains the original Semi position, sans forward Full auto.
CSA uses the forward Full auto postition as the Semi position while there is no Full auto.

I think this is probably the best answer since the CZ-USA guns were relatively new on the market down south. I guess we'll never know why they didn't change our production line though.

After reading this thread I realized that I have never used my safety. :yingyang:
