The CZ-858 is long barrel (482mm), non-restricted.
The VZ-58 is shorter barrel (390), restricted.

Folks seem to use these models Interchangeably - but they are different rifles sold here in Canada. What are some of the MAIN differences and what makes one better over the other? I'm thinking of getting one or both.. :)

Cheers,

58 Pros':
-Looks Cooler
-Chrome lined barrel
58 Cons':
-Restricted

858 Pros':
-Non-Restricted
858 Cons':
-Non-Chome lined barrel
-Doesn't look as cool

:)

Vz 58 is the official designation for the select fire rifle in Czech issue. It should refer only to that rifle. The designations for those sold here are CZH 2003 and CZ 858

Long story short - they're about the same.
Both have the gremlin, depending on which one you get, it may or may not have a chromed barrel.

I prefer the cz 858 because it's non restricted. They're both fun.

I read there is also a 58L long version of the chrome barrel VZ-58 which makes it un-restricted and perhaps lower maintenance. There also seems to be an awful lot of CZ-858's for sale???

Any idea where to find the VZ-58L (long)?

VZ 58 is marstars labeling instead of calling it what is printed on the receiver (CZH 2003 or CZH 2003 Sport)

Sa.58 is a select fire weapon AFAIK (could be wrong though)

I have not seen a 58L for sale in a long time if i had i would have one now...

Vz. 58 is the select fire weapon. 7.62 mm Samopal Vzor 58 is just the long, formal designation for the same rifle.

If you're shooting corrosive through them, they all need proper cleaning. For that reason I see the chrome bore as a nice addition, but not a must. The restricted version (I'll avoid refering to it as anything else while the name fight is still going) looks better imho, but having owned the non restricted, I loved it. I would say unless you spend a lot of time at the range, get the non restricted version, because then you can play with it anywhere.

If you buy off the EE, you could get a deal, but with high round count guns you're pretty much guaranteed to have to deal with the cz gremlin eventually. It isn't a hard fix, but it's just something to be aware of. It basically comes down to adding a little bit of steel plate to the bolt carrier to avoid the gun from firing F/A when the parts have broken in/worn out. Like I said, not a big deal, something to be aware of.

I sold mine a while back to finance a deal that was not going to come around again, now I'm waiting to make some money so I can buy it back. The non restricteds are all round fun, can be modded in any way you like (I'd suggest a muzzle brake, makes it far easier to keep on target when firing fast), and are quite sturdy.

I like my 858 because i can go into the bush with it. You can tac out a 858 pretty nice, the barrel isn't really that long when you see it infront of you.

I've put about 2300+ rounds through mine, no issues AT ALL with the gun. Only has a few bad primers in the ammo so far.

I've got a 58L (non-restricted, chrome lined barrel) and an 858 (non-restricted, no chrome) and really don't notice much difference between the two... aside from the fact that the barrel on the 58L is actually a bit LONGER then even the 858!!

As mentioned above, the military designation is Samopal Vzor 1958 (Sa. Vz. 58), which means Submachinegun, Model of 1958. That is the military designation for the original select fire rifle.

Marstar adverstises their rifles as VZ58S or VZ58L. The markings on the rifle and actual model number are CZH2003 Sport, IIRC.

As Stevo said... the 58S is the restricted version, 58L is non-restricted, both with chrome barrels. 858 is similar to a 58L, but with no chrome. I'm definitely buying one of those short 'krink-style' ones when they come in too :)

...and I bought my 58L on the EE. It's the top one, the 858 is below.
